I have a new system comprising of a Panasonic TH 42PZ81B, Onkyo SR606, PS3 (80GB) SkyHD with a Panasonic BD 50 Blu Ray on order. I am using QED HMDI-P cables and wondered if someone could advise me on what audio format I need to set on the PS3 to get the best posible quality from the Onkyo. Could you also advise whether the Onkyo will automatiically decode this format from the PS3 or do I need to configure that as well.

The PS3 will output all HD audio formats as Linear PCM, so set it to decode everything and output it as LPCM, which the 606 will handle with no problems.

Thanks Andrew. Referring to your article on teh PS3 in Nov 2007, does this mean that I need to have all audio format boxes ticked? Are there any updates on Dolby TrueHD been sent in digital format over HMDI which you seem to suggest would be dependent on a firmware relase.

Hi, I hate to barge in like this, but I seem to be having a problem that is closely related to this.

This is my first posting so please excuse any apparent ignorance!!

I too have the 606 and initially I had a fairly unsophisticated Phillips HD DVD player hooked up by HDMI. Whatever format the disc was in ( eg Dolby or DTS) that was what came up on the Onkyo. Because I have a Samsung 46 F81 I wanted to enjoy Blu Ray and full HD sound, hence the PS3!

However, when I play a disc through the PS 3 the bonus material , intro etc shows as Dolby etc but once the actual soundtrack starts that goes. I note from another posting here the need to set the BD/DVD Audio output to Linear PCM and play it as `Multichannel`. This seems ok and when I press `Select` on PS3 Remote it shows `Dolby Digital`. However, it shows this regardless of whether the audio on the disc is Dolby, DTS, or True HD.

I dont profess to having the finest ear and it may be that I might not tell the difference, but it is frustrating to have this combination of kit and not to be able to get the very best out of it!

And yes, on Audio output settings I have HDMI > Automatic which ticks all the boxes for you!

Cheers
