Project VC-S looking good?

Think I might go for one of these if the price is right - £340 ish ??? Still a hell of a lot of money though for what is essentially a bloody record cleaning machine !

The new Project VC-S record cleaning machine at £299 seems a good upgrade from a Knosti Disco Antistat if you've a large record collection.

What do you think?

To me it looks like a rebadged Okki Nokki.

Although very similar design principles the layout is completely different, also they are £399, although I take your point.

Someone's making a lot of money on Okki Nokki in the UK. Here in NL both machines are €449, which is expensive for the Pro-Ject.

GBP 299 = EUR 411, GBP 399 = EUR 548.

Both machines are a step up from the Knosti (which I really like) but considerably more expensive. The Okki Nokki is a proven design and gets great reviews. I'm sure the Pro-Ject will be equally good. Apperently it really depends on the fluid used: a concentrate with non-residual soap which has to be diluted with demineralised water.

It is available for £299, but admittedly still pricey. It'll depend on the size and state of your collection I guess.

Yes, it just goes to show how much prices vary internationally. Here in the UK the Project is £100 cheaper.

I'm interested, but the only UK seller I've been able to find is Scott Nagle. Err, no thanks.

If it is that, I'd be very happy to buy one, but I don't think it is the same. I'd love to hear from someone who has one.

It's not necessarily that someone in the UK is making money. The difference in price is because the euro has dropped enormously against the pound in recent times. A while ago (let's say a year; might be a bit longer, might be not so long) €449 would have been more than £399. And the equivalent UK price has gone up by more than £20 over the past ten days as the pound has weakened – I know, because I discovered the NL seller ten days ago when the equivalent price was hovering around £320; now it's £345 (according to eBay's calculator). And the equivalent price in pounds is only going to shoot up since yesterday's BoE announcement on interest rates. You have to jump in when the going's good to get a good price from abroad.

Oh, well spotted, Al. It's not listed in their RCM section, but under brand. Worth keeping an eye on. If anyone sees proper reviews, or comes across someone who owns one, do point them to this forum!

Are Henley not selling it?

Odd comment. It's not "essentially" a record cleaning machine, it IS a record cleaning machine!

Besides, it's nothing like as much as a Keith Monks machine, for example.

It will be sold via Henley Designs through their retail outlets. We have the rep popping in today, so we will know more about it, and might even get to see one before stock starts turning up.

Stocks of Okki Nokkis are a little scarce sometimes, so if Henley can keep a steady supply coming in, they should do well. It's a bit frustrating when you have 10-20 customers waiting for ONs when you have no incoming date, and even then, you might not be guaranteed to get all that you have ordered.

With regards to pricing, £300-400 might seem steep for a record cleaning machine, but think of it this way - once you have one, you can clean your records as much as you like for the rest of your life. How much is that worth?

Quite so David. It's the initial outlay that may appear a little daunting. £300 would clean three hundred l.p.'s at my local store.... but only once.

If you have a sizeable collection and the space to store one I think that they are a good investment.

I would definitely be tempted to buy a machine that did a really good job at around £300. I nearly bought an Okki Nokki from that NL supplier the other week when they were £320, but couldn't quite justify it to myself and wavered too long. David, if you do get to look at or even test the VC-S, please do report here. I for one would be very grateful.

So upon seeing the Pro-Ject VC-S launch, I thought what the heck, I'll give it a go. It spent all of an hour out of the box before getting packed back up and is currently on it's way back to the retailer.

I have used an Okki Nokki for 3 years, but I thought the fact the Pro-Ject sealed the labels, metal arm construction, faster platter, more powerful motor would be a benefit.

Unfortunately I personally found a few key things wrong...

The most important would be that it sucked that much power, that every time I turned on the platter it made my speakers POP! Now they are not even on the same socket, yes the same room, but sockets on opposite side. I never once experienced this with my Okki Nokki.

Maybe a personal preference, but the switches are on the right hand side of the machine. I also hold the cleaning brush with my right hand and squeeze fluid also. Therefore I had to put the brush down between forwards and backwards rotations, etc. which severely delayed operation. On the Okki Nokki the switches are on the front, so I can use my left hand to operate all these.

And maybe not as importantly, with the arm being made of metal and not spring loaded, I had to grease it up just to get it to fit on and rotate without any issues. The tolerances on the once I had didn't seem to be very good.

Overall I would have an Okki Nokki all day long for the extra cash. I have had fantastic support from the UK distributer Ken White throughout my ownership, and along with L'Art du Son fluid I have cleaned over 3000-4000 records in the last 3 years. This will continue for many years to come I'm sure 🙂

I have also been using the Knosti for over 15 years but I have just ordered the VC-S so will let you know how it is. I already use a an upgraded Pro-ject Debut Carbon turntable which is fantastic for the money so high hopes for the VC-S especially at the price point (£100 cheaper than an Okki Nokki and much cheaper than the Moth, Keith Monk and all the others on the market. Watch this space!!

Have this about a month now I'm having issues with the velvet strips staying attached to the vacuum arm
I ordered new ones and after 1 night of cleaning a few records they have started coming away from the vacuum arm again
Very annoying maybe I should have bought the okki nokki

Thank you for your reviews guys. Always important to have a feedback on articles that are not that known by the great public (and othen forget to be reviewed by the press).

For me, I was luring between an Okki Nokki and a Smart Matrix. Even if, now, some DIY solutions are popping up. Like some specific mouths that can be mounted on normal industrial vacuum cleaners.

Interesting, have you spoken to Henley designs about it? It's somewhat moot at the moment as their website states it's out of stock at the moment.
