hi just bought a bdp 320 blu ray and a vsx 919 amp to go with my pdp 4270xd plasma, the amp works great the problem i have is that the picture quality of the blu ray is poor. when i select auto or source its says the picture is outputing at 1080p 24, but when i select it manually 1080p, its says my tv is not compatible with the resoultion and the screen goes blank, could this have something to do with the poor picture? or could it be a faulty player? or does my tv need setting up? i tried contacting pioneer but they where no help, does any one have any ideas

thanks

Andrew

If your TV isn't 1080p, then it cannot output at 1080p - that's the reason for the blank screen. You can either set it at auto or alternatively, 720p or 1080i. Mine is set to the latter.

thanks for the reply, my tv is suppose to be able to output 1080p 24, when i set it to auto is says its outputting at 1080p 24 but when i set it manually to 1080p it says my tv is not compatible. any help or ideas? thanks

I believe that your TV has a resolution of 1024x768. This is not enough for a 1080p output which requires 1920ž1080. Many Pioneers can accept a 1080p signal but it then down scales it to either 720p or 1080i.

Do not worry about this though as you will still get an excellent picture.

I actually have that pioneer sat at home right now whilst I think about what to do with it
Your tv allows a 1080P 24Hz signal. It will NOT allow any other signal (50Hz or 60Hz is what your trying to do by (I assume) Upscaling a dvd). Ergo, only blurays will work (downscaled, but running at the correct framerate)

thanks for your reply john

why do you think it says it is outputting at 1080p24 when its selected on auto, when i bought the tv i was told it would be great for blu ray and that it was 1080p compatible,( this plasma TV supports up to 1080/24p video format, the perfect digital film format that will be available on Blu-ray discs and other high definition media(. the last sentence was from pioneer web site on my plasma, when i spoke to pioneer earlier today they told me i should be able to output at 1080p 24, thanks

aliEnRIK i am just trying to watch blu rays, but the quaility is poor

OK - let's try again! The TV will ACCEPT a 1080p 24Hz blu-ray signal, even though it is only HD ready (768p). However, if you set your blu-ray player to upscale DVDs, the rate will be 50 or 60Hz, which your TV can't handle.

The answer is to set your blu-ray player to output blu-rays or DVDs at their native resolution (Auto?) and leave the TV to downscale blu-rays and upscale DVDs. Since it has excellent processing, that might produce the best picture anyway.

The 4270XD will never be quite as sharp as a full HD set, but it should produce an excellent picture in every other respect. I have the 4280XD and it's quite superb in terms of colour and contrast.

Have you Googled the optimum settings for your TV? They're out there and may make a significant difference.

My dad has a very similar pioneer plasma as you but it is the 427xd without the 0.

We recently tried the pioneer bdp-lx52 blu ray player on it and to be honest the blu ray quality on it was not very good.

Something is seriously amiss there as when I first played a bluray on my PS3 I was blown away

Can you define what the problem is (When you say 'poor' can you describe 'why' its poor)

The pioneer on auto setting should auto pick up the 24 Hz 1080P signal then simply downscale it. So 1st up, is it SAYING that theres a 1080P signal when you startup the bluray? make sure HDMI is set to 'auto' (Though to be honest, if it wasnt the colours would be totally out)

Make sure all processing etc is switched off on the tv (contrast enahance, DNR etc)

thanks sorrltger, i did google the settings but could only find these which still didnt look very good.

the pioneer is set on auto and it says its outputting 1080p 24hz, but when i manual select 1080p it say my plasma is not compatible why is this? the quality is poor its no different to a normal dvd, it might be the processing on the tv ? will make sure they are all off, should i set my tv to 75hz 0r 100hz? thanks for eveyones reply and help as you can see i am not very technical 🙂

No Problem Maka,

Unfortunately, while the display is 1080 24hz compatible (i.e. can accept the signal) but it cannot output 1080p. The person at Pioneer must be mistaken as there physically are not enough pixels in the display to output a 1080p resolution.

Your TV was released around the same time is mine. A time when the HD resolutions were somewhat confusing and many manufacturers (such as Pioneer) were badging sets as 1080p compatible as they can accept the 1080p signal, although the viewer will never see 1080p (this was not badged very clearly, and you had to look at the native resolution of the set to see if this was the case). Whether this was intentionally misleading or not, I do not know (although I have my opinion), but it was definitely confusing for the consumer.

It is still a good set though.

I cant disagree with your settings. Make sure ECO mode is off

All I can suggest is leave a bluray running for 4 hours to let the tv get used to the signal (It does get better over time, even my dads 500A did)

Further to that I can tell you the Pioneer looks FAR better when using a half decent mains conditioner (I use an isotek MIRA and a 16 core braided mains cable). The difference to picture quality is quite astounding

will buy a isotek MIRA do you think it will improve picture much, theres only 2 sockets, did you plug your tv in one and dvd in the other or your amp?

My actual setup now is completely different, but ideally the tv and the amp would benefit best (That said, if the amps too powerful for the mira youd be best putting the player in instead)

The picture took a couple of weeks to really benefit, but it certainly did (And again when I fitted a decent braided mains cable)

Initially had similar problems with my BDP-320: disappointing Blu-Ray pic quality (PQ), awful 1080p upscaled DVD PQ, both of which were worse than my PS3's playback.

However, it transpired that my 2-yr-old Pana' HD Ready TV - ie non-native 1080p & 24fps - was not really compatible with the BDP-320.

Subsequently, my BDP-320 is now hooked-up to a 1080p/24fps TV - a Phil' 47PFL7404 - & PQ for Blu-Ray & 1080p upscaled DVD is excellent.

See this thread: http://community.whathifi.com/forums/t/290691.aspx

Hope this helps.

I would of thought pioneer would of made them compatible, my screen is 2 and a half years old paid 1500pound, i hope i dont need to upgrade it as i just forked out 800 on new amp and blu ray, Got i guy coming around tonight to see if he can get the picture any better.

I have a 320 feeding a nearly 3 year old hd-ready 32" panny, and the picture quality is superb. Have you checked your av amp settings? Is the PQ any different when connecting the 320 directly to the tv?

margetti the picture quailty is the same both ways i connect it, hopefully will get it sorted tonight.

Hi,

Just got a Pioneer 320 from Edinburgh - watching on 2 year old Panasonic HD ready TV. Picture is stunning and a noticeable upgrade from the PS3 - feeding a non HD amp, the sound and steering of effects is better also. Even the OH has noticed.

Tried a demo of both the Sony 760 and this Pioneer at the shop (Home Cinema Centre) and thought the Pioneer was better than the Sony.

Just need to go back in a few months time and get myself an HD amp now...

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

I assume your PS3 was used with its basic mains cable and no conditioning?

Curious, but good to hear, that your Panasonic TH42PX70 & Pioneer 320 combo is working well.

I had the same TV/BDP setup & my Blu-Ray PQ was very disappointing compared to the PS3's on the same TV, & 1080p upscaled DVDs were grim.
