Hi all, This is my review of a 2 days old ProAc D18 speakers. The dealer arrived precisely at 4 pm on Saturday as promised. Two person had to carry the 25 kg/speaker unit up to my music room on the 3rd floor (I did provide ice cold lemonade). The first 10 minutes were spent explaining to them my set up so they dont get confused on the speaker cable connections from my EPOS and MF biamping. Then again get their confirmation that this demo is free and no commitment of purchase if I dont like it before they start unpacking this UK sealed speakers. When I say UK sealed it means that was written on the inner packaging (plastic covers of the speakers). Do not purchase the speakers if the packaging have been compromised. I had to dismount my EPOS as they will not be responsible for any damage of my speakers. It took them about 30 minutes to set up the speakers. As the unit is heavy, they used my footers underneath the ProAc spikes (or more like a dome spike) to avoid damaging the wooden floor panel. First into the CDP was Andrea Bocelli's Time to Say Goodbye. Vocals were transparent and uplifting but I still dont get the low frequency as I expected. It sounded quite similar to my EPOS. Maybe because I was spending a good 3 hours before this session listening to my EPOS. Next in was Metallica S&M Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman. The bass drums from Enter Sandman was a bit harsh and I could not feel much vibration from the downfire ports. The guitars from Nothing Else Matter was clear though with a touch liveliness (well it was a concert). At this point, start to feel a little bit let down by the speakers. However, I do agree that these speakers are quite easy to drive. I was listening at my usually level between 9 to 10 o'clock on the MFXA1 and it was giving me a louder sound than my EPOS. Its now already running for 30 mins. Next in was Mariah Carey - Hero. Now it starts too sound different. The soundstaging was a little bit off, so the dealer played arpund with speakers toe in from zero degrees to about 15 degrees. That helped in soundstaging. The bass was starting to sound a bit loose but still not to my expectation. The high frequency was doing great but still have not acquired that overall balanced sound. For the ultimate bass test, I slipped in NAS - Street Dreams and also Bone Thugs and Harmony. Now that really shakes things up. A bit worried that the bass ports and woofers will get damaged. But the dealer said just to leave the volume at that. The speakers will start getting used to it. Sure enough, after another 30 mins of massive bass from these songs, the bass starts to become more controlled (or maybe its just my ears getting used to the sound) So after 2.5 hours of demoing, I discussed with the dealer. I cannot make a decision because the speakers are not at thier full potential and the agreement was for him to bring a show room unit that has been run in plus this new speakers for immediate purchase. Based on this he let me keep the speakers till Monday for me to decide. So I had the system run in the speakers for 18 hours (till Sunday noon) with Mariah Carey on repeat. By Sunday noon, the sound just became better. More balanced tone, feel refreshing when I put on Andrea's and clarity is more defined. Spent an hour listening to the speakers with various CDs and also test it with MD and also songs from my iPhone and laptop via M1 DAC. Had to go out for Sunday lunch. Came back 5 hours later (roughly already 24 hrs run in) and thinsg are getting so much better. I can start to feel the vibration in the bass ports. Put on Eagles Hotel California and Gypsy Kings Bambaleo. WOW! very very satisfying overall presentation. It can really keep up with the pace on the several guitars playing on Bambaleo and other Gypsy Kings songs. And this Monday morning after 36 hours of run in, I put on Bon Jovi (Livin on a Prayer and also prayed that the Mrs will be OK with the speakers)just before going to work. Yes, even on old'ish' rock music, it sounds pretty good. So am I buying it? I have another 4 hours to decide before I call the dealer on my decision. Last but not least, pictures.

Sounds like they're coming onto song nicely. I've certainly heard that the Proac Response range have one of the best midranges for a floorstander, with more bass than, say, the Spendor equivalent. Good luck with your decision. A good speaker will stir the soul and make you forget about it's shortcomings.

Great pics too! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks igglebert.

Yes I really do hope the speakers will reach its full potential with my set up and after full running in. I was told 200 hrs by the dealer but some people said it can take months.

I actually compared it with Dynaudios (too much bass for my liking), Elac (didnt like the looks) and PMC (too small for my room). I may go and have a listen to EPOS M22i this evening.

Yes. Good speakers can do wonders to the soul. My mind sometimes just completely shuts off from the outside world when I reach audio nirvana.

Yes mine came in cherry. Wanted in rosewood but had to wait another 2 months for shipment from UK.
Aaaaahh listening to Janet Seidl now. This is heavan. I am very delighted with the purchase. The dealer threw in a 5 years warranty and also a 75% buy back offer if I wish to upgrade within the next 3 years.

Congratulations, Hefe! I never got around to trying the ProAcs when I was in the market for floorstanders recently due to having to travel a long way to hear any, and the fact that the Neat Elites were just SO good. I absolutely agree with you re the audio nirvana thing - I'm spending far too much time now just sitting (usually with a stupid grin on my face) and soaking up all the great sounds on my CDs that these speakers are communicating to me across a whole spectrum of musical styles.

Enjoy!!

Thanks Frank for th info. I thought so but unfortunately most of the time the local dealer here in Malaysia will not extend the same warranty period from overseas as the cost for ordering spare parts/sending back the item to the manufacturer will be high. Getting the 5 years warranty is very important although I hope dont have to ever use it:). Very weak consumer power here.

Mike_Schmidt:I have the D28's and havent looked past since. I listen to alot of the same stuff you mentioned but more of a metal head and I love em everytime I hear what they do for me

Mike, for me, its actually the metal music that is justifying the speakers for me. My previous EPOS was already providing me with good clarity and soundstaging but low frequency and speed that was lacking. I was listening to Pantera, Machine Head, RATM and Foo Fighters last night and its a whole new experience. The guitar riffs on Take My Scars sounded better on ProAc.

I read a review of the D18, one of those very lengthy and in-depth epistles, which also mentioned a 200-hour run-in period - thereafter the D18's low-end bass response improved significantly

Its now run in for about 120 hrs. Each day, I spent listening for about 20 minutes in the morning before leaving for work and 1 to 2 hrs at night before going to bed.

Each session gives a different feeling and experience on its own. I think it has a lot to do as well with the timing of listening and also my state of mind (before and after work). The sound is more relaxing before actually :)

The bass has definitely deepen and refined. This morning, was listening to Chris Cornell's 2nd album. His works with Timbaland produces some heavy bass drums and the ProAc can really deliver.

The double pedals on Metallica's One is also another example where each kick can really be heard.

As for vocals, it is sweet and and upfront. Putting on La Mer by Kevin Kline from French Kiss OST, i felt like going to France and have a baguette :)

Enjoying every minute of it.

Just to latch on to this topic..(hope you don't mind).. i've just bought some ProAc D18's also

Only got them 3 days ago so they are currently running in with a cd on repeat while i'm out at work. Of course i've had an initial listening session and already I'm beginning to grin from ear to ear

They really are all that has been reviewed of them. They seem to manage to be both open and dynamic as well as sound sweet smooth and refined. Guess this means they are a very well balanced speaker. I was actually initially surprised at how much bass they produced considering What Hi-Fi's review but I guess that's due to me going from B&W CDM1SE standmounts.

After a day of running in, the bass seems to have tightened up a little too. Is this anyone elses experience with these speakers too?

They already sound fantastic so I can't wait for them to be at the best after around 100 hours of playing time.

One question to throw out there.. I'm thinking of buying some Clearlight RDC 1 cones to replace the metal cone feet that come with the proAcs. Do people think this'll be a good idea and will they make much of a difference?

Yes, the bass gets tighter the more you run in the speaker. More definedand controlled. I have finally shut down my hifi after running in the speakers for more than 500 hrs now. I am moving to my old house and has dismantled the set up.

The D18s are definitely providing with the right level of low end. I tested the Dynas as well but it was too heavy to my ears.

I wouldnt personally change the cone spikes yet until I feel that there is no longer 'changes' can be heard by running in. Try to minimise tweaking the speakers until its fully run in.

500hrs! I'd hope they'd be well and truly run in by now! Bet you cant wait to get it all set up again back at your old house!

The bass already seems to be becoming more defined as you say. I was having another listening session last night even though they've only had about 25hrs run in time. I was listening to Mazzy Star - Among my Swan. I was blown away basically. Never heard it sound good

Yeah I think you might be right about holding off on the RDC Cones while I run them in. Was just interested to know if there was anyone else that feels they would really benefit the ProAcs over their own metal cones soundwise?

El Hefe:Helmut80:there's a pair on ebay for £1200. god I wish I had heard them :(What is stopping you from buying them now? 1200 is about 50% off the RRP.

well £1200 based on nothing but other people's opinions is a tad risky.

EDIT: I thought I'd missed them, but their back!!!! 9 days to go, that gives me over a week to audition them somewhere. The colour I want as well.

EDIT2: Progressive Audio in Rainham is about 45 mins from Canterbury. Must call them to ask if they have D18 that I could audition.
