PMC GB1 vs GB1i

Hi. I'm looking into changing my speakers for some PMC floorstanders. I'm looking at the GB1i currently, but was wondering if the GB1 is that much different? Sometimes I notice that upgraded models don't really sound that distinguishable from their predecessors. Has anyone got any experience with either of these two? I wondered if it was worth getting a 2nd hand pair of original GB1.

I'm currently using a set up of Channel Islands VDA.2 DAC - Naim Nait 5i - Monitor Audio GS10

I like the Monitor Audio GS10, but I do find them a little fatiguing and bright at times. I'm also looking for deeper bass, but controlled!

Hopefully someone can shine a light for me.

The GB1's can be upgraded to the 1+ but not the GB1i's because so much was changed ,and for the better. My neighbour has the GB1i's and they are excellent both with his MF A1 amp and his Quad pre and power. I would go for some ex-dem ones rather than the older GB1's.I admit to some bias as I have FB1i's which are terrific.

The i upgrade changed the tweeter to a much improved SEAs unit. Now, I feel that the tweeter is a very important part of a speaker and shouldn't be skimped on. I also think that it's critical to get right to avoid any harshness and brightness. You're opinion may differ. I've heard comments from those that have heard both variants that the new tweeter is much smoother and a worthy upgrade.

I love the FB1s, truly fabulous speakers. I'd love a pair as they're very involving and fun.

Thanks for the replies guys, you've helped make my mind up! I'll wait for a good deal on some GB1i speakers. I really wish I'd stop hearing how good the FB1s are!!! Far too expensive for me.

That's what I'd do. The GB1i are still very good speakers it's just that the FB1i had a scale that left an impression on me. It's not hard, I have Spendor SA1s...

Hi,

I have the GB1i's and am very pleased with them.

I listened to a few speakers, standmounts at first, and told the guy in the shop that I wanted the detail and midrange of the DB1i but also wanted the lower base notes, that it wasn't getting. So he got the GB1i's out and I was so impressed with them, I bought them.

Hope that's helpful.

Dan.

If it's any consolation SWMBO thinks the FB1i's are far too big compared to my neighbours GB1i's.Fortunately my resistance campaign is working , so far!
