Please help! Need advice on wireless speakers for husbands xmas present

Hi there,

First time posting here but I hope someone can help as I seem to be spending hours looking at websites and not getting anywhere. For my husband's Christmas present I would like to buy a surround sound speaker set. Our set up at the moment is a 42" Pioneer flatscreen tv, PS3 and Sky HD. I would like to get some decent speakers to go with it all and set up surround sound but I do not want the wires trailing so am opting for wireless. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Surround sound requires an amplifier as well (also known as an AV receiver) - do you have one already?

Well, you would also need amplification - so an AV receiver or amp. What is your budget?

I hear your pain! Good thing is, if I asked for something AV/Hifi, she would soon realise how much it all costs! No interest is sometimes handy.

"Decent speakers" and "wireless" equals ££££££. How much do you want to spend? Will you be listening to music with the system too?

Anything under £700 with this sort of set up, I would go for one of the all in one systems from Sony that have the wireless rear speakers. By no means the best you can get for your money but you are hindered with the wireless option.

OK. In which case you have two choices - you can get a reasonably priced all in one from (off the top of my head) philips or sony, or you can spend a lot of money on adding wireless capability to normal speakers.

Can anybody remember the model numbers of the all-in-ones with wireless speakers? Philips? Sony? LG?

Thanks, was thinking max £400 and yes we would be listening to music too but not really loud or anything (well not until I get on the Singstar anyway!). Sounds like its going to be too expensive - but a nice idea! This is going to sound really stupid to an expert such as yourself but Home Cinema systems seem to include DVD etc but we don't need that as we play blu ray on the PS3 and have a DVD player and the Sky HD - so what I am looking for? Sorry if thats a ridiculously "girlie" question??!!

You could also consider one of these. Minimum messing around, no wires at all, and a surround sound 'effect'.

Then again, you could recognise that god invented carpets to hide hi-fi wiring, buy him a dedicated AV amp & a dedicated surround sound speaker package and make him really happyÿ

Yeah there's one for starters. £400 in shops - note that *only* the rears are wireless (an dyou'll probably find this is the case for all).

It tries to simulate the effect of surround sound. It'll almost certainly be a lot better than the speakers in your telly but not as good as the recommendations in Gerrad's post. Don't forget to budget for some decent speaker cable if you do go down the wired road.
