Hello,

Bought a playstation 3 last october so could view HD on my 1080p Samsung TV set.

Although the picture is good the fan makes such a racket at low listening volumes I'm really starting to hate it. (is anyone actually really using this as a hard disk music server?)

So my question is is my PS3 fan noise normal or is it broken and should I return it?

Secondly as the format war is in effect over should I just sell it and get a dedicated blu-ray player (Samsung in Costco at just over £200) which I wouldn't need to "shut down the system" when its whirring away to itself.

unless you use the PS3 for gaming id suggest getting a dedicated player if you have problems with the PS3

The PS3's fan shouldn't be making any significant noise unless the system's getting hot. I had the same problem when I first bought mine, with the fan coming on after about 15 mins, but moving it from my rather enclosed AV rack solved the problem. If you've got it ventilated properly and the fan is still that noisy, I would suggest your PS3 may have a fault.

Ventilation is very likely culprit. I'll move it and see if it gets better but think it will just have to go as would make my tv rack look unbalanced. Thanks anyway.

Before you decide to get rid of your PS3, please remember that it has the major advantage of regular updates in line with the developing Blu-ray standard. You may need to pay a lot more than £200 to get a dedicated BD player that can be updated.

I would consider looking for a better position for it so that it is properly ventilated.
