Plasma TV 42 inch Panasonic TH 42PX80B

I have several questions regarding the above TV which I would be most grateful for any help.

Having studied WhatHifi and viewed various TVs in shops we decided on the above TV as it seemd a bargain at(£650) for the quality. However we noted in a well known high street shop the following:

1. Stands.
Sold at circa £200 where as I note you can buy them from Amazon for around £50. They look the same, has anyone any experience of the cheaper variety?

2. Power surges.
Do we need a power surge protector (well known shop was positive we did!)? If so what make/brand can be recommended etc.

3. Finally I have not started looking for a surround sound sysetm yet. Would I be aswell just buying the 'budget' recommendation as listed in Whathifi? Most shops seem to have lots of TV to demonstrate, but very few surround sound systems.
