WHF team, for blu ray use and gaming what has the best picture quality. Sony kdl40w4500 or the panasonic th42pz80. I need help to choose one, i can get the sony for £888 or the panasonic for £729.

hi, thanks for the replies ive decided on the TH-42PZ85 however i cant seem to find anyone who sells it. Richer Sounds / John lewis no longer stock it (low margins unofficially) and i would like to buy it today or tomorrow while panasonics free 5 year warranty is still available... anyone any suggestions? do comet stock it under a different model name?

Empiredirect.co.uk have it on their webpage for £899 (plus delivery). Includes 5 year warranty. Thinking of buying one myself soon (sounds as if it will have to be very soon) so please let me know if they have any, or if you find somewhere else better.

The Panasonic's got a slightly better TV tuner, sounds a little better and is, obviously, two inches bigger. The Sony looks punchier and its Motion-Flow system is smoother and more natural than Panasonic's IFC. Your choice...

Corect me if I'm wrong, but you can turn the Panny IFC off and motion handling is still spot on (IFC smooths out 24p playback, if you like that sort of thing). Whereas you really have to have the Sony Motion plus enabled all the time. So how does the Sony handle sports (footie, rugby...)

Both IFC and Motion Flow can be switched off - but the point I was making is that whereas IFC appears to have little benefit, Motion Flow (on Standard rather than High setting) appears very effective. And I usually hate this sort of stuff!

The Sony is excellent with sport - we had to heave a lot of our LCD prejudices out of the window on seeing how it handled fast motion.

As I said, I can still understand people picking the excellent Panasonic plasmas, but the W4500 Sonys give people a true LCD alternative that simply wasn't there even a month ago.

if they only did the w4500 in a 42" model!

The 46in is reviewed here - same excellent qualities. Obviously poor SD content (eg low bitrate Freeview channels) doesn't fare quite as well as on the 40in, where less upscaling is required - but that's the same for just about any larger set.
