Most modern Flatscreens have poorer sound than older CRTs. They've also abolished phono audio outs. How do I overcome this? I would like to connect to my hi-fi.

find out which output has an audio out part and get a suitable "wire".

most new flat panels have digital optical output so you could use that if the Amp has optical in.

That rules out most hi fi amps then. Especially older ones...

I guess optical and a DAC is the answer.

there other options but the OP has forgotten a very important bit of info.

As mentioned, optical digital out via a DAC, or if the TV has a Scart socket with in/out capability, you can use a Scart output to phono adapter.
