Well on that bigger philips tv i had for a while, when watching the john ross show it looked pretty good, also was interesting was how the tv was grey but at night time looked black.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with. Apparently they were going to skip active shutter glasses and go with no glasses tech. It was looking good until the tests when the overwhelming feedback was "I feel sick!". So they have come back to the glasses approach.

He he, I happily admit that I never bought into the ambilight idea. I guess you either love it or hate it.

It is definitely a good idea to have some lighting behind the screen as it eases watching for the eyes.
But it should be homogeneous D65 light to complement the picture and perceived contrast ratio rather than influencing the picture.
Adding various different colours to light will inevitable screw up the intended picture and how you perceive the colours. As a purist I cannot accept that.

As for 3D with ambilight I am not sure we have the same situation as for 2D. I could easily imagine this would confuse the 3D experience even further, in addition to the remarkable crosstalk on LCD screen as highlighted by Max

I don't buy a word of that, and even then, it can be set to show one constant colour...

Beleive what you want.
I am very tempted to post a link to prove my point, but that is unfortunately against the house rules, so you will have to search for yourself if you want to know.

When you say it can be set to a constant colour, do you mean on this particular set? Because I know for a fact that you can't on certain models from Philips.

okay hold your horses!

can you turn this ambilight feature of on the phillips ?(which i`m sure you can)

.than we dont have that problem
