Sadly this isn't a post with any answers, just wondering if anyone from this forum has any insider knowledge that they can share on release dates for the 9000 series 40" or 46" new Philips TVs? One (retailer) site is suggesting September for the 40", and Philips has the 32" set on their pages, but it would be great to know when they may be released.

Just as important (if you're allowed to say) is when WHF may be reviewing the sets... I'm not going to trust blindly that Philips will be back to their best, as otherwise I'll have the ambilight / non-ambilight decision to make.

Cheers

Yes, it's September. Here's the response from Philips:

The Philips 9000 series, which this year will be coded PFL9606 (expect the 46” version which will be the 46PFL9706 due to its advanced moth-eye filter), will be in stores in September. We’re delighted that you’re excited about the new range and we’re sure that when you see it you’ll agree that it was worth the wait.

Well we got the Sony Kdl-46HX923 in for review this week - will be a major test of that in our next issue, out before end of month. The TVs should be more widely available by then

Clare,

great news indeed, i have been all over the net looking for information on this model and found bits and pieces speaking very highly of this particularly the 3D glasses (lighter and much improved) and little things like the face recognition and energy saving tricks!, the only thing i cannot find for definate is how many USB ports it has (i'm hoping for 2) ideal for charging both pairs of glasses at the same time, the screen is made of Gorilla glass which i researched and found interesting but would not like to test its strengths by testing it!, another good point for your review is the USB recording function as Sony seem to think you are best using Western Digital drives for this, and would be worth pointing out the minimum size of hard disc space for this to work, we can only hope and pray the full backlight array is better than the LG 9900 Model (which was resolved by LG placing diffuser panels in the later ones) anyway enough yadda yadda, get on with the review so we can all have a butchers!

I've flagged up your points to our test team. They'd already mentioned the lighter 3D glasses when reporting back their first impressions. Plenty to test before we've finished, though - including lengthy comparisons with rivals....

Ah, just noticed my reply had failed.

Anyway, I was just saying thanks for the answers, Clare.

Failing TV, trying to decide what 40" set to replace it with.

Hi,

Just wondering if you have got in the 40" or 46" 9 series philips to test yet? And when will we be seeing the review?

Thanks,

Peter

Some months have passed since the new 7000 passive sets from philips were released and still there are no reviews of them. As long as these are almost the only alternative to LG passive TVs, are you planning in what hifi to review the 76X6 family in the short term? And of course the new 9000 series about to be launched.

Since June I am looking forward to reading every new publication and review from what hifi, but you keep on reviewing the same brands and models again and again (panasonic plasmas&leds, lg passive sets, samsung, sony EX-NX, and few others), even with 2 almost indentical models in the same comparison - ej. samsung d7000-d8000).

Will you please extend your range of brands and models to philips, sharp, etc. when doing your comparison benchmarks?

Thank you in advance

We request sets from all brands; it's up to them whether or not they choose to supply product for review.

To which I would add we've had the devil's own job getting any TV samples out of Philips this year. Apparently even Philips's UK PR company doesn't have any in stock.

One of my colleagues will be with Philips at the IFA Show in Berlin next week, and rest assured we will be raising this matter with them as we're as frustrated as you are. :wall:

Thanks Andy and Andrew for such a quick answer. It's a pity from Philips as whathifi is a reference not only in UK but in many other countries as well, Spain among them (we even can choose between the original or the spanish version). If I were a marketing guy from Philips I would try to use all specialised channels at hand (and particularly whathifi) to sell my products, unless they were not good enough... which I consider is not the case. But maybe they've been very busy with their new venture (that could also explain their poor efforts in marketing their 2011 TVs). Hope they will change soon so that we can compare their performance against the best in class.

Kind regards from the sunny Spain

Hey Andy, just wondering if any colleagues of yours had any luck with Philips? And if they (Philips, not your colleagues) can offer any explanation as to why the TV list on the Philips (UK) site is paired down from a few weeks ago?

Cheers muchly,

Rob/Retne

Cheers Andrew.

I had seen that piece of news, but by using it as your reply are you suggesting that that's why the 9000 series TVs have been removed from the TV list - these are going to be released instead? Or just highlighting that as Philips news?

Also, that doesn't explain why Philips are apparently being reticent to give you guys some samples - the obvious, if cynical, conclusion perhaps is that they're not very proud of their 2011 sets...

From this post, and a few others it seems it's not just me that's interested in seeing what you have to say about the TVs, so Philips would be well advised to actually let you guys have something to review(!).

Hopefully not just the 46" TV either, as that's a different model to the others.

Hi folks.

So while it hardly classifies as investigative journalism, I just thought to see if my direct link that Firefox had stored for me would still work and if I could see the "missing" TV I was interested in - the 40" 2011 9000 series.

This link is http://www.philips.co.uk/c/televisions/9000-series-102-cm-40-inch-full-hd-3d-max-dvb-t2-c-40pfl9606t_12/prd/ and it now redirects to the UK home page. This is very odd.

I'm wondering if it's because Philips want to promote their Design Line range that Andrew links to above, or they simply don't think it's worth releasing this TV in the UK any more. Combined with their lack of TVs to the press (well this press, that I know of) plus the news of scaled-down TV operations a while back (and the general lack of money some manufacturers have been reporting in the TV industry) is all very odd.

“Curiouser and curiouser!” cried, well, me.

I've just got a 40PFL9705, got to say so far its a cracking TV! you'll see on various forums that this range has had a lot of issues and many people would be fearful of purchasing one, i've got to say so far so great!

Nice TV, good sound, good SD upscaling and Ambilight is fantastic! Havent tried it with a Blu-Ray yet but sure i'll be impressed once i get my new blue ray player! Not bothered about 3D so wont be trying that.

Its a bargain at the moment and can be found for about £750!!

@ear They're meant to be producing TVs still... as Andrew "Clickety" Everard ;) highlighted they're still releasing TVs. On the other hand, maybe they've changed their stance since this April news story.

@andyryan03 - cheers for the info. I had looked at that, and since at the end of the 2009 when they won the WHF award I was thinking I could have my cake (great pic etc) and eat it (i.e. Ambilight). The thing that's stopped me is the lack of Freeview HD - with Oxford due to get upgraded this month I certainly intend to have that feature.

Mind you, I watched some great big Sony (55"+) for a few minutes last night and thought the picture was really good, even though it was (SD) Freeview and I was too close, so perhaps I'm not as fussy on the great pic thing as I thought. Sadly it wasn't the time to look for the model of TV I was watching, and I can't get back there easily (without someone accompanying me, anyway).

just read a very interesting article on the 'moth' filter philips are applying to their new 46" set.. Philips 46PFL9706H Moth Eye TV.. a quote from the article

'The highlight, predictably, is the 46PFL9706H’s contrast. We’ve never seen anything like such impressive black level response from any LCD TV before. In fact, it’s tempting to say we’ve not seen such impressive black levels from any TV before of any technological type - though if we’d been able to run it against a last-gen Pioneer KURO plasma, maybe that could have made a liar out of us. But only maybe.

To say the reports I've seen from IFA seem positive about the 46" TV are an understatement.

Claims that it may be better than a plasma... lively stuff.

The issue I now have is that having sketched out a 46" frame on my chimney breast and it dominates the space. We're actually 2.9 m away, but both think the 46" TV (including frame) is huge. Although distance guides seem to suggest that for HD or 3D content 46" is just right or a bit small. Might have see if there's a friendly shop that will let me try the 46", then the 40"...
