Suppose this question is for Clare and the team as no one has seen the new Panasonic DMP-BD55 except on review, but well here goes...!

How good is this machine compared to the PS3 on blue ray capabilities I.E, Sound and vision output.

Is it worth stumping up the extra cash to buy the panasonic

(Just bought the Panasonic TH50PZ81 and Onkyo 605 amp to Partner it)

Well, given the Panasonic DMP-BD55 got 5 stars at £400 and the Sony PS3 got 4 stars at £300, I think this means, in WHF's view anyway, the BD55 is worth the extra money...

Even the Panasonic DMP-BD35 outguns the PS3 for Blu-ray sound and vision. The DMP-BD55 buries it,

For a high-res screen of your size, i'd go for the 'BD55 if you can afford it - not only should Blu-ray discs look (and sound) stunning, but it's a superior DVD upscaler, too.

I'd say the Sony 550 pips the Panasonic 55 for music, but not the 350. But then this is all relative - it takes a step up to a Blu-ray player of the calibre/price of Pioneer's LX71 before you start talking really decently musical....

Is there any news on a possible blu ray player with sacd/dvd audio coming at anytime in the future?

The only reason to buy a PS3 would be if you wanted it for gaming - in this instance the bluray functionality is a nice bonus but certainly no comparison for a dedicated player like the Pana's you're looking at. I know WHF disagreed with their awards this year (a little unfairly IMO) but if you want a gaming machine the PS3 falls well short of the Xbox 360 which has a far superior online set-up.

Thanks To Clare, Proff and all for the comments, looks like another purchase in our houshold soon.

I will see if I can sneak it in without the wife noticing...

NOT A CHANCE...!

I've got an Onkyo 605 receiver paired with the KF 3005 speaker set, and ordered the Panny 37PX80. Was lookingÿforÿa Full HDÿ42", but with aÿ9ÿftÿviewingÿdistance (and less occasionally) thought is wasÿto bigÿfor me.ÿ

The BD player will be also used for music asÿa replacementÿfor my 10 year old entry level Denon system. Do yo think the BD55 would be worth the extra cash with my equipment, or are it just the analogue outputs that make the difference. I've also read somewhere the BD35 doesn't support Divx, but according to your review it does.

Another hint that my pre-ordered Sony might soon take the plaudits! Please make it happen!!!

Hi Clare

I need some advice, my current setup is a PS3 connected to Samsung LE46A656 via HDMI and I am seeing some bad moire / shimmering / jaggies or whatever it's referred to as on the IMAX sequences such as the building frameworks on the Prologue and also the end of the hong kong sequence where the light on the buildings seems to "wobble"

I have other BD's such as The Incredible Hulk, Indiana Jones IV, Iron Man, Batman Begins, I am Legend etc etc and see no signs of this type of problem, now I am aware there is controversy over the way TDK was handled as a transfer, however, the issues I am experincing are not being encountered by every owner of the disc.

I am wondering if it would be worthwhile upgrading from the PS3 to a Panasonic, either BD35 or BD55 and whether it would likely solve this issue?

Hope you or anyone here can help me
