HELLLLLLLLLLLP! Is there anyone out there who can help me,i was playing a game of modern warfare last night on my original 60g ps3 when it all went wrong, the game stuttered, slowed and then shut down, when i try to restart the unit i get the dreaded flashing red light,i think its overheated?Whilst i am not too bothered about losing the ps3 i am not too happy about losing twelve days worth of gameplay and lots of game data for my sons games of lego batman, starwars etc.etc..Is there anyway of taking the data from this unit and putting in another new unit,am i right in thinking that as soon as you take out the hard drive and replace back in it asks you to reformat hence losing data? Also if i have to get a new one how do i cancel my account? Thanks for your time.

My original PS3 recently died but I got the dreaded Yellow light of death. Looking on the net for solutions I noticed loads of the original PS3's were starting to pack up. In the end mine was beyond repair. Sony could have given me a refurbished model for £130 with no warranty. I thought that was pretty pointless and just replaced it with a new one.

Whatever problems you are having I guarantee there are loads of others in the same boat. Just google your symptoms if it continues and you will unearth loads of information on which is the best step to take next. There are also lots of useful self repair vids on youtube.

Tried again after cooling with no joy, googled the problem and found how to resolder of the cpu-gpu? but this involves removing the hard drive hence losing data which i dont want to do,also some ideas about blowing a hair dryer up its ***!

You won't lose your data just by removing the hard drive. Surely the data will still be there when you put the drive back in? Would probably be worth backing up though just in case...

I thought that and was going to try the resoldering trick and then buy a new unit and transfer the data by ethernet but everwhere i've seen says once removed the hard drive needs reformating losing data, hopefully thats wrong????Another forums member said it has happened to him and he just bought a slim and his game data was on his account not his m/c but how can you open the same account on another m/c?

Easily, you just log in with the details. When my original PS3 died I got a new slim, when you go to "create an account" there is another option to access another account. Once you've entered your original email address and password your old account is there. Simple

Hi,

My 40Gb PS3 just died too playing MW2. This was my second console. First one -disc drive died 8 months old. Gamestation replaced instantly under warranty. Took out a 2 year warranty on new one and that has just died -2 years and 5 days old!! Out of warranty. Went off and refused to fully reboot.

Called Sony and told them the situation and they just kept saying that 'it is out of warranty but could supply a replacement for £130, with a 3 months warranty'. I explained that after having 2 consoles in 3 years could they not offer me greater warranty even if i paid for it-They refused! I was absolutely shocked and if i am honest a little upset, i loved my PS3.

I asked Sony if they consider 2 consoles in 3 years to be a realistic timescale for the life of their console, they refused to comment, kept saying that 'its only an electronic device'. I asked if they thought an average of 18 months for a £300 console was a realistic expectation and would they be able to say that 'the consoles were fit for purpose' - Refused again.

I then mentioned that i read that the PS3 is looking at a 10 year lifespan. They confirmed. So asked if they believed that based on my previous console lifespan is:

' Buying 7 consoles in 10 years realistic in their opinion?

and can they 100% say that the PS3 console is 'fit for purpose'. Obviously refused to comment.

Can see now why they ended up on Watchdog. At least Microsoft offered 5 year warranty.

Sony took my details, still waiting for a Manager to call me back -yeh right!

Needless to say. i miss my PS3, but i don't think ill be getting another one. I spend around £2,000 a year on av kit but won't be touching Sony again for a long time. They really did shock me especially after dealing with Microsoft and Panasonic in the past who were both absolutely brilliant.

Kind Regards,

P.S. You can reaccess your account on a new console. Sony did help me with this first time round

If you can manage to retrieve your disc without butchering the PS3 to pieces you could get around £70 for it on ebay even in its broken state. Some people buy the faulty ones and repair them and sell them on at a tidy profit. I had a game stuck inside mine and couldn't be bothered with the hassle so I rather childishly had a tantrum and tore it to pieces. Getting the disc out was still difficult, I ended up getting it out of the disk drive with a pair of the gilrfriends tweezers!

Hi Daveee,

I too have seen them on ebay in a broken state with decent bids against them.

If somebody got my console working then would they be able to get my account details, credit card info etc?

Saved my Password.

Thanks

Hi guys, have decided to get a slim today and have a go at the 'gilkys' resolder/flowing diy repair, should be fun, will let you know how i get on,you are right about the life span cookie, there seems to be a lot of fat ones dying recently,10 years my butt,i was realkly carefull with mine too,was on stilts with another fan circulating air around it and hoovered out once a week!Still if they lasted for ever we would'nt have to buy a new one and make them lots of money, wish i did'nt like mine so much would probably get an x-box but for the blue-ray,cheers.

I am now on my 3rd ps3 all fixed by Sony BUT i Paid for the Continual Play Plan which is run by Legal & General on their behalf.

On the Sony website there was an advertisement for this but i think it has been withdrawn as people were abusing it.

The ps3's are similar to the ps 1 & 2 with overheating problems, ( 4 x PS1 ) ( 3x PS2 ) all are in my opinion are absolute tut for reliability, but excellent on the gaming front in there day.

I run a website for ps3 racing & all of my members have had at least 1 or 2 ps3 break downs due to over heating, broken blu-ray drives, & total system board breakdowns. The ps3's seem to last from around 16 - 22 months then fail, my 1st one the blu ray drive went & was fixed, the 2nd one lasted 3 months & had total motherboard failure, 3rd ps3 9 months & still running.

My advice is if you use them for a lot of gaming then dont use them to play blu-ray movies get a dedicated blu-ray machine, the new slim ones appear to have the same / similar problems as the old fat ones, ive heard of a few overheating within the 1st week of purchase. A certain company Game were offering a 5 year warranty for an extra £24.99 ( wish i had got when i bought mine ) this also includes the 2nd hand ps3's they sell.

You can access your account on a new ps3 quite easily just log in using the email address & details you originally registered with Sony
