Hello,

I'm very much into hifi and audio and quite new to modern television and all of its possibilities.

Can anyone please tell me what exactly can I use the Optical Digital output of my Tv for ?

Looking forward to get some new ideas

Passing the internal TV tuner audio to a soundbar/base/external AV receiver (that doesn't support ARC).

Mostly it seems to be used to start arguments on the Sonos forum about not supporting DTS though...

A Bluray player, a Digital Tv receiver and a Macbook Pro are connected to my television with HDMI.

Is it possible to get their audio signals through the Optical Digital television output to an external DAC also and if so would that be a good set up?

Depends what the DAC's connected to but in general no, that's not the best way to get the best possible audio, it's likely that, no matter what you put into the TV it will probably only output stereo through the optical connection. If you want the very best audio you need to be looking at putting all those sources through an AV amp first.

What brand/how old is the tv? A lot of modern sets generally allow 2 channel passthrough of the audio via optical.
