Onkyo TX-SR608 Ghosting/Trailing problem

Hi all,

I have a Panasonic V10 connected to a new Onkyo TX-SR608 and when I watch Sky I get a problem with ghosting. I'm currently watching darts and on the bright red background there is ghosting on the players when they are shown against it.

I plugged my Sky HDMI lead straight into the Panasonic V10 and it still does this, however the slight ghosting or trailing effect is transparent, when the Onkyo TX-SR608 is plugged in it makes the transparent type ghosting/trailing effect look black so it sticks out way more.

I have the Panasonic V10 set to THX mode and the Onkyo TX-SR608 is set to through on the picture modes with the upconversion off. Not sure how to fix this?

What are my options, I bought this from richer sounds I'm not sure how I'd even explain it to them.

As I say it happens when the Onkyo is not plugged in, however the trailing effect is transparent and hard to see, either when the camera pans or the players move. However with the Onkyo plugged in I get the added black effect that makes it worse.

Hey,

Have just invested in one of these in the boxing day sales and had a related issue which might have the same solution to yours. I was experiencing some frame stuttering and drop frames every minute or so. After a helpful google and a lot of reading, it transpires that the video processor in the unit has a fault which renders it unable to correctly deal with 1080p 24p content even when set to simply pass through the data. It literally takes 24p to mean 24p instead of 23.976p and tries to add a frame every 41s to compensate, causing the stutter. To rectify this, you have to bypass the video processor in the unit, which it tells you to do in the manual anyway to maintain THX standards. To do this, hold down the VCR/DVR button on the receiver then press the return button, then press the return button again to change the display to SKIP instead of use. This fixed my issue, and may help to alleviate yours, as it might be caused by excessive video processing; worth a try anyway. I found it odd that despite being WHFSV's product of the year that this hasn't cropped up before (that I've read anyway)

Hope that helps!

Hi and thanks for the reply,

Thanks that did fix my problem however now the on screen display doesnt work as I guess it just passing through the video now as I have disabled the video processor. I can also fix my problem by switching on game mode, using game mode I can still use the OSD as well, however in the manual it states the following;

Game mode setting to On

The delay will decrease but in return the picture quality will become poor.

I don't like the sound of that to be honest, have you tried turning game mode on for the 24p problem?

Hi,

Yeah I should have mentioned that also, the OSD will disappear because the video processor on which it relies is being disabled. I haven't tried turning game mode on for the reason that it says that it will degrade picture quality. I'll give it a look, but as i'm not too bothered about the OSD I'll probably just leave it as is on my setup. I suppose the only way to see which one is best is to do a like for like comparison between the two methods to see if you can see any difference; if not you can use the game mode and get the best of both worlds!

It is a bit of a shame that these units can't have there firmware updated, its probably not a hard bug to fix either.

I am tempted to look elsewhere as this is quite a big bug, once the video processor is off it can no longer upscale either so that is a loss for me also. However for the money i'm not sure what else would be better. Maybe an email to Onkyo to see what they have to say on the matter also.

Yeah, from what I've read it looks as if its not a firmware issue, but a chipset issue. Yeah it is, the upscaler is not meant to be great from what I've read, but then again not had a chance to test it yet, and as you say not sure what would be better for the money. Someone from another forum (admittedly from the US though) apparently contacted Onkyo and was treated quite rudely, before being told it couldn't be fixed, an email might be worth a try though, I wonder if there's anyone from Onkyo on the forums, like there is from places like armour home etc who could comment...?

Hopefully someone can comment as you say, I'm not too bothered about the upscailing, my Denon had it and I didn't use it. However its more the fact that I can't have it that's annoying. It was also nice to have the OSD.

Do you know if there is a way other than Pure Audio to use the Stereo speakers in Full mode rather than 80hz or whatever I set the crossover to?

Yeah, same with the upscaling, just had a play and think that my blu ray player and TV do a more than adequate job so not all that bothered, but I get what you're saying, its the principle really!

The OSD is nice, but having done some more research it will always slightly impair the video signal as there will always be some video processing done to allow it to work, which is what is causing the issue to start with. Of course, just how much difference it would make is debatable, but i'm always in the camp of 'the purer the better' when it comes to video and audio signals, so its no big loss to me really.

Good point, i'm not sure, possibly by selecting the 'direct' listening mode might do the trick, otherwise I think someone else might have to chip in...

I need to stop reading about this amp now as there seems to quite a few problems coming out, I will have to try both my 360 and PS3 this afternoon to see if that works properly, I'm hearing about blue dots on the screen and all sorts.

Hopefully all will be well as this is a good amp
