I have an Onkyo 609 connected to a Panasonic TX-P46GT30 with an HDMI arc lead plugged in to HDMI2 and a Digital Optical cable connected to Digital 2 on the Onkyo. The TV talks to the Onkyo in that when I turn the TV on and off the receiver responds and I am getting TV sound through the receiver. Although the Home Cinema volume bar appears on screen and goes up and down when I operate the TV remote the sound does not change. What have I connected wrongly.

Subject to your TV being ARC capable, you do not need a digital optical cable. Your ARC HDMI lead should be connected between the "HDMI OUT" on your Onkyo and the appropriate ARC HDMI connection on your TV. Make the appropriate settings on your amp (see page 57 of the Onkyo instruction manual) and your TV.

Hope that this is of help.

I have tried the set up with only the HDMI connected as instructed to HDMI2. No result. And with Digital optical cable connected with the HDMI plugged in to HDMI2 and again tried with HDMI1 . No result. Panasonic are no help..They just say that they cannot guarantee functionality with everything and they inferred that the Onkyo was not as sophisticated as their TV. They did point out that my old TV was the HDAVI Control 4 version and that my new one is HDMI Control version 5 but as I understand it all that changed was the addition of the audio return channel. The HDMI lead is the full function QED cable with ARC and Ethernet capability. Would a cable change help ?

Problem solved but not as I thought. After much fiddling with the menus with the HDMI lead in the arc port which is HDMI2 I decided that I would try reconnecting the digital optical lead between the tv and optical 2 and putting the HDMI cable into HDMI4. It works. The TV remote now controls the receiver volume. There may be an incompatibility between the Panasonic and the Onkyo Receiver in terms of the ARC function.

Thanks for all of your input.
