Ok after much thought and testing ... I think for my viewing distance of 7.21 feet a 32 inch would be ideal.

Sat in my brothers room and he has a 26inch 720p that is 8 feet away. My viewing distance is a foot closer and a 42 inch would be too big...However to benefit from full 1080p a minimum screen of 37inch....However I've read the review for the Sony KDL-32W4000. Can you really notice a difference between 720 and 1080 on this screen? I know The phillips 32PFL9603D does show a difference...wondering if this difference is noticeable on the Sony, since the phillips is now discontinued.

Yes and No. That is why the Panasonic 37PX80 is a good choice for watching sky HD but looses out on detail when watching blue ray discs downscaled. Also consider Samsungs32/37A656. Compare the deals on BuyDigital.tv and seek a demonstration probably dixons for best price or Dealer with proper demo room Richer Sounds might accomodate and is always prepared to price match. All the TV's mentioned will not dissapoint though not perfect HDTV Guide, HDTV Review also evaluate all the latest and greatest models and none will see any significant benefit of full HD on 32"-37" screen sizes however if you intend to predominately watch blue ray discs then a full hd model won't have to downscale.

What Hi FI sound and visions own recommended min viewing distance for HD viewing Sony 40-W4000 1.7m - 2.7m SD.

42" = 1.9m min HD - 2.8m min SD

40" = 1.7m min HD - 2.7m min SD

37" = 1.6m min HD - 2.5m min SD

32" = 1.4m min HD - 2.1m min SD

When viewing Sky,Cable or Freesat HD most prefer progressive scan therefore 720p the min HD diststances still applies only for HD channels. 1080p games and Blue Ray Discs included can all be enjoyed on 42" screen at your sugested viewing distance.

My findings are Samsung LE40A656 V Sony 40W4000 both have excellent colour rendition prefering the samsung for white level calibrating and other tweaks though some gripes with time lag when gaming requires adjusting. It has excellent SD decoder but high gloss screen can be reflective. The Panasonic TH-42PZ80 Plasma should also be considered though screen burn might be an issue. It benefits from excellent screen uniformity shadow detail.
