nexus 7

Just ordered a 16GB on Google.Play, woo!

I don't understand their Nexus Q device however, unless other apps come available for it like Roku channels.

anyone know when hmv will be stocking this in store? i have store credit there that i want to use, so have one on pre pre order but they have been a bit flaky on the dates..

I gather some retailers have already run out of stock. We only got our review sample this week and will be testing it shortly.

Thanks Andy - i am preorder number one in one of the dublin branches of HMV.. they have been telling me for the last couple of days it will definetely be in tomorrow, that they arrived in HMV warehouses in the UK monday and they would have it thursday.. will be passing the shop at lunchtime so will check again.. Apparently Tesco in the uk have stock and if you order online it will be shipped for next day delivery... i'd have sourced elsewhere only i have the store credit to use up. Looking forward to your review of the sound quality through headphones as I've read the DAC in it is very poor. I'm hoping its still decent enough to be listenable though

Cheers,
Mick

If anyone gets a Nexus to use to control a squeezebox server, please let me know how you get on. I can use my blackberry, but the screen is a bit small.

Had my 16gb for about a week now and i have to say it's probably the best tablet experience i've had to date, super slick great screen and feels great in the hand.

Some apps however don't seem to be compatible with this tablet which might just be the 7inch form factor.

Also the wife seems to like it, finds the internet fiddly on the phone but didn't want a large tablet sat in the room

hoping beyond hope HMV have mine today... i have my case ready to rock since monday... i'd have bought elsewhere long ago only i have store credit that needs burning up..

well fair play to HMV.. they came through with my pre order.. just toying around with it at work the last couple of hours.. so far pretty impressed.. a lot like my galaxy nexus only bigger and not a phone 🙂 the screen isnt as saturated as the one in my nexus but its not bad.. just installing apps now and copying a few albums on to see what the audio quality is like.. must install viber to see if it will work on it as its been broken on my nexus since i installed jellybean

hi folks,

just wanted to say I have had the nexus 7 for a few days. I have to say I like it quite a bit, I have a Galaxy Nexus smartphone and the transition from using the phone to the tablet is seamless. I didnt think the bigger screen would make much difference but its a really nice form factor. I can fit it in the side pocket of my coat for going to work and its very comfortable to hold for reading and browsing the web. Its funny my 5 year old daughter keeps referring to it as my 'giant phone' She uses it for talking tom and watching youtube music videos.. Watching video is great on it. The screen quality while not up to the amoled screen in my phone is pretty decent and the viewing angle is great. Sound quality from the speaker is what you'd expect. Over headphones its noticably worse than my phone with my ie80's but with a bit of tweaking with the equaliser in poweramp have got it to sound pretty decent. The states get 25 dollars free credit with their nexus 7. There are forums out there explaining how you can get the same here. It involves using a vpn and tricking the tablet to thinking your in the states. I did it and got the 25 dollars applied to my account and also the free transformers movie but its a bit of hassle. Nice to have the free credit all the same.

Still the freedom with android is great, i rooted mine and using an OTG usb cable have been able to plug in usb memory sticks and i even plugged in my sansa clip plus yesterday at work and was able to copy an album from the nexus 7 to the sansa.. its really nice to be able to do that kind of thing!

One thing is flash isnt officially supported on the 7, but you can download it and use if you wish.. i think steve jobs had it right though, flash is just a power hog and battery drain on mobile devices.. the quicker its gone the better..

Looking forward to the whathifi review..

Cheers,
Mick

All in all a really nice introduction to tablets for me.. if apple dont introduce an ipad mini i think this could do quite well.. of course if they do, people will flock to the ipad alternative, especially if you have existing ios devices..

Anyone know whether usb audio out is supported ? Think I read that this would be implemented in jelly bean.

Very tempted to get a Nexus 7 but I might wait a month for the romoured iPad Mini annoucement on Sept 12th.

there is some work on custom roms/kernals to get existing USB Dacs working with nexus devices. Its tricky though to install roms etc and a road i'd rather not go down. Jellybean does support USB audio but its a different implementation to the current standard. Normally the PC/tablet acts as the host USB device with the DAC then being the 'slave device' for some reason google has gone down a different road, with the DAC be the 'host' device. This means existing Usb dacs dont work but there should be new type dacs coming to market with the new implementation. I'd love to try and DAC that would work with my nexus 7/galaxy nexus. Apparently the Fiio e7 works with the Samsung Galaxy S3...

I do that and have got two different apps that I use Orange Squeeze and Squeeze Commander, both are which on the Play app store. Both very good - haven't decided whcih I prefer yet.

The Nexus is a great device, very impressed. Superb value for money.

Like the look of the stand in the review video anyone no what it is ?

It's the Griffin Arrowhead. Two little stands, place them wherever, so pretty versatile.

anyone know a good source of quality screen protectors for the 7? i have a folio case on mine but notcied to hair like scratches on the screen last night.. very fine, looks like from maybe the kids swiping left/right on temple run with long fingernails 🙁 hate having a damaged screen.. but also hate screen protectors unless they are invisible.. and put on perfect

In my experience, media devil is better than invisible shield. The anti-glare works really well on my iPad.

Thanks looks like they only taking pre registration interest at moment.. will keep eye on the web site.. cheers, mick
