Next 4k tv review

any idea when we might see the first review of this years 4k tv's? I know it's early days but I'm impatient 🙂

Cheers gel, with my current tv problems not looking like they will be sorted I'm keen to jump on the 4k band wagon early, rather than buying a 1080p tv and then a 4k one later. Plus I think a 55" will be my max size and won't be able to justify to the better half swapping a 55" for a 55". She will probably go for a faulty 50" to a 55" though. I'll be looking at next years sales though at the earliest, so a long way off but I can start looking now 🙂

Many of the new 4K sets we saw at CES in January have not yet had their UK/European launches, which traditionally take place in March/April. Only after that do we get sets for review. Looking at the April issue, which is going to press this week, there are none in that. So I suspect it will be the May issue (on sale in April) at the earliest. If we get any 4K sets before then we may well be tempted to put them online first.

I'm going to start saving now and hopefully purchase one in the summer of 2015, i will want to spend around £2000 for the tv, i'm hoping i can get a 60"-65" possibly a samsung i will also be looking to get a a/v reciever and a 4K blu-ray player as well.

@rocket razor if you were to buy a 4K tv this year their is no 4K media to play on your tv, i think 4K blu-ray players will be announced later in the year and will be expensive probably around £1000 like when 1080p blu-ray first came out.

It's also worth remembering that if you intend to stream the likes of Netflix 4K you'll need a set with an HEVC decoder built in. Many of last year's 4K sets didn't have them, so in that sense they're already obsolete. Most of the new models announced at CES for 2014 were suitably equipped, but things like that can catch you out as the technology evolves. There's a full update on the state of 4K in the April issue of the mag, on sale March 12th.

id hope to get one that is future proof, for example I would have avoided this years Sony ones, a) because of the silly speakers, b) it's not hdmi 2 compatible. The samsung one however had the detachable box which meant it could be upgraded. At the same time I also have a budget to consider which is similar to yours, will be about £2000's. But this one will have to last me, I wouldn't be able to buy another

ah, that HEVC decoder might be a problem. I'm assuming though, perhaps dangerously, that you could buy a separate box to do this? Which would mean you haven't then wasted your money?

i think it's either a 2014 or 2015 set for me, by which time hopefully things have settled down

Do we know if any manufactures have confirmed that the HDMI ports on the new sets this year will be 2.0 capable?
