Hi guys im new here and found this place whilst lookng for advice on this slight problem.

I managed to tear one of my very high tweeter cones for my vintage pioneer CS-454 speakers. Im in need of a replacement.

My question is is there any sites on the net that sell vintage audio equipment? Most importantly in the UK? all ive been able to find is us based sites.

Or failing that do any of you guys no any way to fix a tear?

Many thanks stephen

try Wembley Loudspeakers in London .... they may not have the exact replacement, but they may advise

may be cheaper to buy an old pair of good speakers .... here are a pair of old B&W DM2 .... owner states he has had these from new and in good working order .... speaker cabinets have been repainted black, ....

if you don't mind old speakers, these may sell for very cheap

But assuming the OP has to replace the drive unit with a similar replacement rather than an original, it's worth noting that it's best to replace the tweeter in both speakers to maintain a tonal balance.

Given the age of the speakers, it's highly unlikely that 'new' genuine replacements will be available, but as already mentioned it may be possible to get a tweeter of the same size and with similar sonic and electrical characteristics.

If you can get access to the rear of the cone it may be possible to repair the tear by applying small pieces of tissue paper to the rear with diluted paper glue from a craft shop to hold the tear together. You can do this in a kind of Blue Peter papier mache manner, applying a few layers to build up strength.

But go easy on the number of layers, as the whole point of tweeters is the lightness of the diaphragm, required to allow them to reproduce high frequencies.

Repairs on paper bass cones are feasable, I have fixed many. On a tweeeter however the change to the tonal characteristics would be considerable. The way that a cone tweeter beams the HF is considerably different to that of a dome tweeter. Directional signature can also be determined by the crossover as well as the power handling. Stuffing in a better modern tweeter designed to be used with a 3rd order crossover into a 2nd or possibly even 1st order which is on the cards with the PIoneer would either sound horrible or even damage the unit. You could in the first instanve try repair with some thin paper tissue and balsa cement or similar. I'd recommend having a chat with Wilmslow Audio and / or Falcon Acoustics.

Falcon are undergoing massive changes at the moment so could be slow with answering your query.
