Love it Jax, the panels look fantastic. Did you provide the images for them? I can believe that those behind the speakers work wonders for the (usually) bassy Dynaudios.

Very nice.

Did you make the acoustic panels yourself?

I like the way you can print pictures on them, very wife friendly.

Thanks everyone! Not homemade, purchased from an online company.

Yes, I picked the images from an online database. Cost a little more, but I was trying to kill two birds. I wanted some art for the bare wall and with these I was able to accomplish that plus reduce room reflection. The images did end up slightly more zoomed in and cropped than I imagined, but I'm very happy with the look...

Regarding the bass, yes it helps. I really wish I could move the speakers another foot out, but it would be too ackward. I'm considering some sort of triangular foam for the window corner behind the speakers. I think that would be ideal. But I definately don't want to go over board with panels. Just a few to help out, nothing too extreme.

Nice setup. My girlfreinds been mentioning i should get some pictures on the walls.

Erm, she'd kill me if i showed her these !!!!

hahahhahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha !

love those art panels, jax. not so sure about the little fellas jim-jams though. still at least it looks like you have got him interested in a proper sport......... rugby!

do the panels change the sound much? have you tried them behind your listening position? what kind of frequency range are they meant to deal with? blimey, it's getting like the spanish inquisition over here.

Looks like you're living the dream yourself there Jax ! A1 system, and lovely unique wall canvasses to boot . They look great !

Love those acoustic panels! Do you know ehere they can bought in the UK? And if Im not being too cheeky what sort of price to expect?

P.S. If The Force fancies a house swap Ill give you a 2 bedroom flat with a couple of cats thrown in!

Hey bobby, sorry, I've no idea about a UK source. There are numerous online companies here in the USA that sell various types of acoustic panels. They range in price from very cheap ($30 a panel) to very expensive ($500 a panel). The plain grey panels I have behind the speakers were on close out and I picked them up for only $22 each. The graphic panels on the side wall were $125 each which included allowing me to pick an image from a gigantic online image database. I picked this particular company because they had good customer service when I called them and because they were cheaper than a lot of the others. Plus I figured that framed art prints would cost me nearly $100 each anyway...

love those panels on the wall jaxwired, they look great. i have recently bought the dynaudio stand4's second hand and weirdly they are still in my hallway as i havent put them in my room yet. anyways what i want to know is how far to fill them up, they are currently filled to the top with sand by the previous owner but my old stands have attabites in them that i was going to swap over. when i was putting the attabites in my old stands i noticed that if too full the bass was losing some depth. anyways what id really like to know is how far you have filled yours up?

Hi bluebrazil,

I filled mine about 2/3 with sand. I baked the sand to make sure it was bone dry. The back pillar has a hole in the bottom for running speaker cable up through the pillar so you will need a speacial plastic bag. Mine came with the bags. The front pillar is sealed so just pour the sand right in. How did I pick 2/3s full? Well, I just thought they'd be more stable without sand to the very top. So it wasn't really a sound decision (no pun intended). But, they work great, look great, and my Dyns sound good attached to them. One tip for you, My speakers attach to the stands, but if your using other speakers, I'd use blue tac or similar to bond the speakers to the stand. Hope this helps. Have fun.

Hi jaxwired,

Could you tell me please what kind of cd holders are you using? The ones you have on the wall. I am looking for something to put two rows of CD really close to each other (one above the other). Any idea where I can look for something like that, Something like you have but even smaller (I want two rows to be really close to each other almost one on top of the other).

Nice set-up by the way.....

Thanks,

thanks for your reply jaxwired, i think i will try for the same levels if i have enough recycled attabites, my stands appear to have the plastic bags in the rear pillars so thats a bonus. i'm using dynaudios 52se's so i will need to use the top plate, i have the top spikes but im a fan of bluetac and like the extra security that brings, yes i am a bit clumsy

Hi stone28, just saw this post, sorry for the delay. Those CD racks are all metal and very nice. I'm very happy with them. The best part is they were ridiculously cheap. I purchased them at IKEA. I think they were like $8 each in US dollars. I'm pretty sure you can get the same racks in the UK IKEA. Good luck...

Nice to see someone using panels , apparently this is a must upgrade as the room has the biggest influence on sound.

I have been researching panels for ages and will eventually add some , question is what difference did you find they made, marked or subtle?

Also the panels behind the speakers look low , I would have thought the centre of the penel should be lined with the centre of the speaker , am I missing something

Nice setup though

The difference is somewhere between subtle and dramatic. It's definately worth doing. The number one most recommended application for acoustic treatments is called "first reflection point" which is usually the point midway between your chair and the speakers on the side walls, floor, and ceiling. If you only do one thing, it should be to absorb the midpoint side wall reflection. It's especially noticable when I crank up the volume.

Regarding the panels behind the speakers. I agree that ideally they should be hung slightly higher, but the framed art prevented that. Besides, the Dynaudios are rear ported and the port is closer to the bottom of the speaker, so the ports are actually firing near the center of the panels.

and I doubt it's only my opinion 😉

OK, I'll try and find time to do it. I'll try and post some updated pics very soon. I thought maybe people had enough of my pics. But since you asked...

Jax,

How far is the back of the speaker from the wall/panel ? How does the difference of an inch forward or an inch back affect the sound? Looking at the pics, if the distance you have is ideal sound-wise (with the panels in place), then these speakers should work for me (I had discounted them some time ago).

Thanks, Neon

Thanks for the quick response.

The ported speakers makes sense to me now as does your first reflection point explanation , thats where Ill be treating first , along with the rear wall.

Then probably bass traps

I'll be treating a Home Cinema so quite a bit to do

Hi Neon,

The back of the speaker is 18" from the panels at the closest corner. The other corner is slightly further out due to toe in. If my room was bigger and the door way was not on that same wall, I would move them out another 3 to 6 inches after some experimentation. These speakers tend to be bassy so they definatly need room to breath. I love these speakers though. I wouldn't recommend them without a demo, but I'm still thrilled with them after owing them for awhile now.

Are you in the USA? If so, somebody posted a link to a web site for a Houston company that I was shocked to see selling these brand new for way, way under list price. Might not be an authorized dealer though...

http://www.hometheaterstore.com/productdetails.asp?productcode=CONTRS14

They also claim to still have Contour 1.3 Mk II new in the box:

http://www.hometheaterstore.com/Dynaudio-Contour-1-3-MK-II-Loudspeaker_p/contr13mkii.htm

And the SE model of that speaker for about the same price:

Lots of Dynaudio speakers at really low prices. I'd email the USA distributor for Dyn before buying from them though...
