OK, I bought an iPod in May last year and already the earphone have disintegrated. Not to worry, as they were pish anyway. However, it raises the question of what I can really get for my pennies in return. Obviously I'm after some decent sound quality (including some bass!), but also something that reduces ambient noise (iPod earphones are next to useless on a flight) and something that isn't going to project too far outward and be disturbing to the people around me. My music tastes vary from Floyd, Zeppelin, Hendrix and GNR, to Mylo and Hot Chip, and Oasis and Stone Roses. Any suggestions, link or reviews would be much appreciated. Cheers, Rob.

What's your budget? We've a handy round-up of bargain (£10-£55) 'phones in our new, May issue, out tomorrow...

Hi Rob,

I have been using Grado`s excellent SR60 with my ipod and hifi at home for quite a while. The cable might be a bit long for ipod use (metre and a bit) but its perfect for when at home. Look at the class reviews they get, well deserved. Good all round sound but not the last word in noise blocking but usable on transatlantic trips none the less. Big foam pads add to hours of comfortable listening without ears getting too hot!
