I did have a 28 year old system, with a 40 w RMS Technics amp and matching tuner, cassette deck and record deck, and Castle Tyne speakers. Not using the cassettes or lps any more, and wanting a smaller system and remote control (getting lazy), I have changed to a Marantz MCR502 receiver, and am delighted with it.
Part of the plan was/is to change the speakers from Castle Tynes (not available now, stand mounted and have a 7" driver and tweeter), but the Tynes sound pretty good at the moment.
Question is should I stick with old, biggish Tynes, or replace them with a more modern, neater pair of bookshelves. The ones on the shortlist are Tannoys Mercury V1; am I likely to get similar performance from a modern bookshelf speaker, compared with almost 30 year old stand mounted Tynes. Has technology moved on, or do I live with the big ugly old brutes? Is big still better?
The answer may be to listen to the Tannoys in a showroom, but I find it virtually impossible to compare, unless I am listening to something I am used to, and in the same (home) surroundings. Music choice is mainly classical/opera.
Any comments, please?
Many thanks,
Voly
