£900 for the kit, nearly half on the speakers...are you planning to get some higher quality used kit or are you relying on budget kit brand new? I'd suggest you revisit the amounts you want to allocate to be fair as well as getting an idea of the kind of sound you like from your gear (warm, bright, detailed, etc, etc.).
Okay, well, I'd be inclined to lower the speaker budget and invest in better quality source kit. NAD, Harman Kardon and Onkyo are three I would point towards in the first instance for the amp and CDP, Q Acoustics 1030i for the speakers (if you can take a floorstander), Dali Lektor II or Arcaydis DM1 both under £300 for standmounts. Factor in another £70 for stands and about the same for cabling too.
I'd say go for the system that you think sounds best but in order to do that I'd listen to the advice above and forget the denon - it's more of a gadget/ gimmick. Have a look at the link below for Richer Sounds who have some amazing kit for sale at knockdown prices. Bare in mind you'll still have to budget for cables and stands.
The 3390 is universally well received (pardon the pun) but not so the cd player (pretty much panned!) I've owned Hk in the past and found that there's no consistency with them with some sounding bright and others a little to warm or brash for my liking.
I'd warn against making judgements based upon aesthetics mate as that's a bad road to go down which will only end in disappointment!
jamevo19:what do think about b&w 685 speakers are they any good
Hey bud.
General concencus on these is that once they are 'run in' you'll reap the rewards. Also consider Dali Lektor 2 which are a little cheaper but worth every penny of the 685s. Precision timing and every breathe detail make these a must audition. Also worth considering Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2 which are on sale in Richer Sounds for just £350!
Given the 'running in' time of some speakers it's worth taking a look at what's available on the aftermarket where most speakers will be ready for action and you'll get plenty for your money!
Epos M5i are on the Superfi website very heavily discounted. NAD and Epos are said to work well together.
See if you can arrange a demo of the NAD and Epos system at your local Superfi store, and compare with other speakers.
The 4 binding posts are for the + and - terminals of the high frequency / low frequency drivers (HF and LF joined together unless bi-amping or bi-wiring)
I have Kef iQ5se speakers on my bedroom system. Great sound, but were outclassed when I put some Epos M12.2 speakers on the system. Timing, clarity and midrange are three of the characteristics that spring to mind in describing why the Epos were better.
I think you'd find the same difference between the iQ30's and the Epos M5i's.
I'm sure they'd let you try both pairs in the shop.
Preparation is the key to success as they say. Phone in advance and then you can be sure that the demo room will be set up and ready with the kit that you've discussed on the phone. Especially important if they're busy/short staffed for whatever reason.
I had a demo of Roksan/Kef gear about 3 years ago at Superfi in Stockport and found the room well prepared and staff very helpful. I rang them the day before to arrange the demo.
