Music speakers

I am a 17 year old student who wants to combine an imac with a speaker system between £200-£300 used for music only. I would prefer 5.1 system as the room they would be used in is about 7mx8m though not sure if this is a good idea as although I listen to a lot of music I know very little about speakers. The music is usually very bassy so would love a powerful sub woofer. I don't know whether I should have tower speakers or bookshelf speakers or what brand to choose so any advice would be great thanks

If it's just (or primarily) for music I'd stick to stereo, or at most 2.1. Youi'll get more bang for your buck and it'll sound better - at least in my opinion.

Are you averse to getting second hand stuff?

I'm fine with second hand stuff my current speaker setup is logitech Z323 but i am looking for more high tech or better sounding system as i can now use remote on my ipad to control the imac and therefore do not need to use my current extended 3.5mm jack cable. I would definitely prefer 2.1 as i am addicted to bass

These do look very nice speakers but i have the money to buy better and i want the best i can get for the £200-£300 budget and these i can get for £70, there is nothing wrong with them its just I wonder if i could do better with my budget.

Again, 2 speakers only, but you could consider some large active monitors, the Mackie MR8 or Yamaha HSM80 are a touch over budget but would give you excellent music quality with powerful bass from their 8 inch drivers.

Probably the most highly rated speakers system for 'desktop' situation is the B&W MM-1 but again these are only a 2 way design and just over your budget but well worth considering in my opinion - its looking a tad tricky to find a really good recommendation in you budget.

I have the Monitor Audio BX2s and would highly recommend them. They fit well within your budget. Not sure how you would drive them from the iMac though. I'll leave that to someone else.

None of those speakers would compare with large active monitors on sound quality and in particular, bass output. Though they may be a more compact solution.

M-Audio Studiophiles AV40 (active monitors) are within your budget and produce a very accurate sound. If you combine them with a DAC (I have CA Dacmagic) they could become a very entertaining pair ....

For that sort of budget, in a proper sized 7m x 8m room, for playing your type of music I'd go for a 2.0 set-up.

Something like Goodmans Magisters for £200. You wouldn't particularly need a sub-woofer with these babies. Look out for them on eBay.
