Just bought the sony 550 blue ray player, its multi region for dvds from richer sounds if it breaks down and has to go back to sony to be fixed will they do it since its not meant to be like that? more importantly could that make the 1 year guarantee void? would getting their 5 year guarantee cover me from this risk?

Best bet is to ask Richer Sounds. In all cases I've seen, where the multi-region hack voids the warranty with the manufacturer, the retailer has covered you for this instead.
