Im not sure whether i have my sub set up properly in the settings, it sounds good most of the time but occasionally i get a rumbling noise thats seems out of context, i do have a guide to what the settings should be but they seem too loud, any thoughts on this please !

Also if i was to change my sub,

1, which sub would be better ? Tannoy ts-12?

2, if i was to keep the mj what sub lead should i upgrade to ? currently i have a QED QUNEX P-SW

A bit of help with this would be great, thanks.

I have!, what are the settings in the amp? -15db appeears to be the max if so turn the volume down... and recalibrate.

Ok these are the settings given to me by creative audio where i bought my speaker package

LO = -30
RO = 80HZ
PH = 0

My liv room is approx 15ft x 11ft, thanks.

OK, I have the following

LO = -50
RO = 120HZ (max)
PH = 90

The amp takes care of the Roll off, the Phase should be set to 90 for a downward firing sub but change the phase while playing base heavy music and pick a phase setting which corrisponds to the max base sound output.

Again what are the settings in the Onkyo amp for the sw level?

Hi There,

I have the same sub as you and I also have a living room of similar proportions. When I first got the sub the deep bass was almost non existent so I turned the sub up to compensate. Unfortunately this had the knock on effect of making the upper bass far too intrusive. I hated this sound.

Now this may or may not be the problem you are having. If it is though, I managed to resolve the problem by finding a particularly good node in my living room that produces excellent bass at the listening position. After placing the subwoofer in this spot I was able to hear far more extended bass with quite a smooth transition through the frequencies. This allowed me to turn the subwoofer down so the upper bass was not intruding on the sound while still enjoying the extra extension the sub provides.

Sorry if this is teaching you to suck eggs, but if you have not done this then it is really worth while. If this does not work (and indeed this is the problem that you're having) then I wonder if a bigger and/or better sub will help you achieve the same results.

I'm afraid I cannot remember my settings, however this is going to be different for everyone as you are matching them with different speakers and environmental factors will have a huge impact. Personally I found that the THX frequency sweep found on THX certified DVD's to be very useful to spot any over powering frequencies caused by the setup or resonance of the room (also a possible cause of your problem). It also helps you to see if your sub is providing bass down to the 20hz region.

Hi john,

You seem to know alot more than me anyway,this awfull sound is like a machine gun but deeper, its a bit random, most of the time its fine, infact talking of guns when i play cod waw on ps3 and choosing to use the fg42 i hear it then, as all the guns on the game have own distinctive noise.

At the moment i have the sub by the right side of my av rack where the tv is, then to the right of that is a door way, the left side of tv is my speaker, its a bit awkward without seeing the sub wire but i suppose i can experiment, also i have a wooden floor.

Hi Bullitt,

I'm glad to help.

If this is caused by a positioning / volume level then try the subwoofer set up tip on positioning at this website:

EDITED BY MODS for house rules.

There is a dialogue box about half way down, with a good tip on how to get it right.

(Mods: I hope I haven't broken any house rules by posting this link :/)

Only a tad: we're sure what you meant to say is that there's a fine guide to subwoofer set-up here

This may not be the cause but, it's worth a shot anyway. It can still give you a better sound regardless, so there's nothing to lose
