Michel Tecnodec Vs Newer Turntables

Hi,

I've owned a Michel Tecnodec for about 11 years now and it's been great (fitted with Rega RB300 and Dynavector 10x5 cartridge).

I was wondering how it compares to the current crop of decks, for instance the Rega RP3/Elys2, Pro-Ject 1 Xpression Carbon UKX or Clearaudio Concept

Time does not stand still and I'm wondering whether there would be any benefit in swapping the old for the new.

Thanks,
Mark

Unless you're looking at something like the Rega RP8 or Gyro SE, I'd stick with what you have. The Tecnodec is still a good deck, and you may get a little bit of improvement moving to an RP6, but whether it's be worth losing money on what you already have is debatable.

That's pretty much what I thought, just checking to make sure that the bar hadn't been raised by a huge amount over the last 10 years....I'll stick to what I've got for now then.

Thanks,
Mark

Good plan Sir. If you have money to burn then upgrade your cartridge (it's the best way to get more 'bangs for your bucks')

...on that basis what would be a good upgrade from the Dynavecor 10x5 and would work well with the Tecnodec/RB300 combo?

1. Keep the Tecnodec.

2. Keep the cartridge.

3. Sell the RB300 and get either an RB303 or 808 as funds allow. The newest Rega arms are far better imho.

4. Borrow the Michell HR power supply and see what difference it makes. There are reports it's not trivial!

Just be sure to get the right fitting - single point or three point.

Quite correct David. The RB300 would be (pretty sure) a single point fitting and all modern Rega arms are three point. Other manufacturers arms will fit (Roksan) for example but I still think the RB300 will take a very good cartridge.

To the OP there are plenty of cartridges to choose from. If you are into vinyl for the long run I might suggest the Nagaoka MP-500 or better still make the move to low-output moving coils (i.e. buy the Schiit Mani phono preamp) and the world of real quality cartridges just gets bigger.

Is the RB300 on the Tecnodec the Michell-modified arm? This might possibly be better quality than a new, unmodified RB303. I don't know this for a fact, but have read that the Michell mods make a big difference in performance.

Yep, the TecnoArm should do the trick. Don't even think of changing the Tecnodec for any of the turntables you listed. The quality of the Michell is in another league. Take it from someone who once had a Tecnodec, but now has an RP3/Elys 2 gathering dust because a 40 year old Pioneer sounds better.

Thanks for all the great replies...looks like I'll stick with what I've got, maybe start looking into new arms. As far as I'm aware it's the standard RB300 there was no mention of it being a modified version when I bought it.
