My current hifi system comprises a Meridian 507 CD player, Audiolab 8000a, Audiolab8000px bi amping a pair of Monitor Audio GR 20 speakers, I also have a Linn Sondek turntable.

Despite my systems vintage I still love it's sound and am perfectly happy with it. Unfortunately my Meridian 507 has started having trouble reading some CD's or starts hunting for tracks or jumps. A couple of dealers have told me it sounds as if the laser is starting to go. I have contacted Meridians website and they have said that they no longer produce parts for this model.

Does anyone know where I may be able to get my player fixed or alternatively suggest a new player worth buying. The Naim CD5si, Roksans Kandy and Casapian models have been mentioned. I love my Meridians sound and would like something similar if possible. Any advice would be gratefully received

If you look on the M unplugged forum there is a chap called Chris who repairs meridian components he is an ex employee.

Look under restaurant and repairs section for his details he may be able to help.

I've still had no luck in finding someone able to fix my Meridian 507 cd player

Im now resigned to having to replace my beloved CD player and wondered if anyone has any suggestions for a replacement that would be along the same sound lines of my meridian

Various people have recommended the Roksan Caspian M2 and the Kandy, Naim cd5 Si & xs and Musical Fidelity m6 scd

ive not heard any of these players myself yet but would welcome advice from people who have

If that is the case now is a good time to look into streamer type options instead. Having access to your whole library is far better than just a single cd at a time.

But you need to find the right solution for sq.

Hi Egodwin,

I bought the 506 in 1995 as an antidote to the often brittle cd sound that had frustrated me since being an early adopter in 1984. 5 years later, it began skipping and Meridian replaced the whole transport/laser FOC despite occuring in the last weeks of the warranty. Took up their offer to install the latest Burr Brown 24bit dacs and it gave a further 15 years of happy listening. I experimented with an Mdac - sterile to my ears - and irDac- excellent for the money. Then sold the Cd plus the pre/power which raised enough cash for the Marantz 8005 duo - a fair swap. I find the combo excellent and close to that original Meridian sound only with more detail, SACD/DSD and the flexibility of use as a digital hub. Based on that, I would add the Marantz SA14 S1 se to your list. There are also some excellent reviews of it's stablemate, the new Denon DCD2500NE, which has a newly developed transport, dual power supplies and like the Marantz, is built in Japan to their usual battleship standards. The Denon lacks the digital inputs of the Marantz as it's partner amp has an onboard DAC.

PS. I had the Monitor Audio studio 20SEs, the previous model to yours. - excellent speakers.

Good old What HiFi forum. It's so lame it can't even wrap someone's login name across two lines, with the result that newbies think "emperor's new c..." is his actual login. Which is unfortunate considering it could be taken as rude. His full login name, confirmed by clicking on his profile, is "emperor's new clothes".

following your advice, I was lucky enough to find a dealer that sold the Marantz SA14-S1 SE. After a demo in their showroom they let me borrow the machine for a week. It sounded fabulous, a huge improvement over my failing Meridian , so much so that I purchased the player within a day of the home demo

They do a matching amp which given the cds quality is making me tempted to take a listen, though so far my Audiolabs 8000 And PX are working well with the marantz

thank you to emporers new cloths for pointing me in the right direction

What was the problem getting it fixed? It's only a VAM1250 you were after if it was a laser problem and then you would probably only change the laser is not the mech if it was still working OK. Oh well.

Have you tried speaking to "The Tech Guy". He's in Cambridge and I believe that company are experts at fixing classic Hi Fi gear. Good luck getting it sorted out.
