Marantz PM6004: is my amp messed up?

I have a Marantz PM6004 with Audio Monitor speakers. Both are less than a year old.

I plug my iPod directly into the back of the amp with the cord sold to me when I bought the hi-fi. Up until this week, I was very happy with the set up.

A few days ago, I heard a bit of a popping sound and the Loudness function had switched off while I had some music on. I switched the Loudness function back on but the amp just doesn't seem to have the power it used to any more. I don't really even play my music that loud. The neighbours definitely have no reason to complain.

Can somebody tell me what has happened?

Have you got another source to try to see if there is any difference?

Does the ipod work ok with headphones?

If it's less than a year old take it back under warranty

It's definitely an ipod issue. The ipod has a small gain and you need to push the amp harder to get decent volume. What you are hearing is the high distortion created by your ipod.
