Marantz Pearl Lite SACD as replacement for Micromega Stage 2. How good is the Micromega compared to more modern players ?

My Micromega Stage 2 is now 17 years old and I keep being drawn to the Marantz Pearl Lite as a possible successor to the MM. Not least the fact the Marantz is now around £675, down from the original £1000.

You'd need to compare them, though obviously the SACD compatibility and onboard DAC the Marantz player offers will be two ticks in boxes the Micromega couldn't claim. Otherwise, have a listen, though I imagine the difference won't be too great...

Thanks... an audition is the answer I know. I see the Pearl Lite seems to be Japanese made too, which maybe another plus point.

I had the Micromega Stage 3 and upgraded to a Denseb B420. The difference wasn't huge, although a bit more detailed. The Micromega was starting to skip a few tracks, but the Densen often refuses to play certain CD's and the smallest of scratches completely fools it. The Marantz has SACD which I would certainlly have liked and ought to be very reliable.

The transports were a problem with Micromega but fixable. I fitted a new Japanese sourced one some years ago and the actual player itself is lightly tweaked with better opamps fitted.

The Marantz just seems such a bargain at the moment and as you say should be trouble free. Dedicated high end players will I think become rarer (and more expensive too) in the not too distant future, so maybe now is the time 🙂

If that is the case it might not be worth the extra outlay. Which speakers are you using? I found this to be a much more dramatic upgrade.
