A bit of advice please. I am after a new speaker system to go with an Arcam Solo, which I haven’t bought yet!

I went to the HI Fi exhibition in Bristol at the beginning of March. The first set of speakers I listened to were the Wharfedale Diamond 10s – stand mounted. I wasn’t impressed with them at all and cannot see for the life of me why What Hi Fi gave them 5 stars. There was no base at all; in fact I wouldn’t give them house room.

The speaker that almost sold itself to me, except it isn’t available yet was the Neat Acoustics Motive SE2 floor mounted speaker. I thought that this sounded excellent. I was also very impressed with the Arcam Solo Muso. This was set up as a TV sound system with 4 speakers plus 2 sub woofers. They also demonstrated them as a Hi Fi set up and I was very impressed with them. However you don’t give them a write up so not sure what you think of them.

OK here’s the question. Will the Solo Musos sound good in a HI Fi system on their own £200 a pair or will they need a sub woofer which is Arcams Logo? Have What H Fi tried them out or has anybody out there used them?

My gran (aged 93) recently tasked me with getting her a small easy to use system and I went for the Arcam Solo Mini.

This came with the Wharfedale speakers, as a package, but I was also unimpressed, so had listen to some others, including B&W 685 which I found shouty and uneven. Then I tried the Monitor Audio range - £200 Bronze and up to the £400 RX1 which is what I ended up getting for her.

They appeared to work well together - so I can recommend you try whatever Monitor Audio size/style fits your budget and see if that works for you too!!

She loves it, by the way!
