Please can somebody help the ultimate noob.

My wife loves her vinyl and uses over ear headphones but they are not loud enough.

Can you please tell me if i need to fit a better amp to boost the sound to the headphone or if i just need better/louder headphones................ unfortunately i have a skinny budget of £100ish.

Hope somebody can help*music2*

Welcome. We would be able to help you more if you gave us more information. What hifi is it, what turntable is it, what headphones is she using? And so on. At the moment no one can help you from the information you've so-far provided.

Look for headphones with a low impedance and also with a high sensitivity rating. Ideally the impedance should be under 32 ohms and sensitivity over 100db.

If you get a pair of headphones with both of the above they would be easy to drive to high volumes.

Thank you very much for your help with this.

I am afraid its not the best gear but that's the budget...... Gosh this is embarrassing!!

The stereo is a Steepletone SMC99R

The headphones are Wharfedale WCD 150V Digital Headphones.

Thank you very much for your help with this.

Hmmm...if you're finding the headphone output really quiet, and you're confident it's not caused by a fault in the headphones or your stereo (don't forget the volume control in the headpnone lead), then I echo others' comments that you probably need to hunt down some sensitive low-impedance headphones that are designed to be used with mobile devices.

If you don't mind closed headphones I can recommend the Audio Technica M50X which have a very low impedance of 38Ω and probably sound better than anything you've ever heard. Amazon are doing them for a stupid price at the moment, over £50 off.

Don't be embarrased about your equipment....the main thing is that your wife enjoys her music.

Good call from MajorFubar, the Audio Technica MX50's are solid performers, especially at that price. Another good deal I spotted, have a look on Massdrop, they have a pair of AKG DJ181 UE cans up for grabs for USD80.
