So tonight is the night..... basically I have been holding off turning my CDs into Lossless while I found a Terastation that I could wirelessly network (and then hook up to a Squeezebox). But I am not ever going to be able to afford that Terastation (or Squeezbox) unless I sell me dang CDs (I love a good Catch 22)......

Over the weekend a external HDD gave up the ghost and befell the spectre of the dreaded 'corrupted file'.... so I had to re-format it. Tax inspectors amongst you will be glad to hear that I saved all the tax files.... however the film buffs amongst you will be sad to hear that I lost all the films that I had (goodbye 'Lethal Weapons 1, 2, 3 and 4'......).

Still like the economy and Napoleon's scorched earth policy after destruction there is re-growth...... so I have a 320gb empty hard drive to fill.......... so the Lossless experiment can begin.

Up until now I have been anti-Apple. The reason for this is more political than technological.... I do not like the way that they impede compatibility in order to profit at the expense of .... well.....me. I wanna complete control of my Itunes downloads.... and I want to be able to play FLAC (which would be my lossless format of choice) on my Ipod......... so to my question.......

I have never used any other music server programme other than Itunes...... and I own an Ipod...... so bottom line..... there is no way around the problem that I have to start the losslees experiment using Apple Lossless is there? Do I have a practible alternative? Will this present compatibility problems with the Squeezebox (looking ahead) and can I convert Apple Lossless to FLAC in the future? (as I move away from the Apple company for personal issues with their ethos).

Going to have to use Apple Lossless I'm afraid. I ripped my collection to FLAC and then bought an iPod so used a batch convertor (dBPowerAmp) to change them all over. It can easily be done in the opposite direction too.

VoodooDoctor:It can easily be done in the opposite direction too.

which also means if you did choose to leave apple behind you could do so.

As others have said, you will need to use Apple Lossless if you want to use your ipod and a squeezebox. I had issues with using Apple Lossless with my Squeezebox - low powered (400MHZ / 512MB RAM) PC trying to transcode Apple Lossless into somthing the Squeezebox could play on the fly caused stuttering and major dropouts, so I ended up coverting to FLAC which doesnt need transcoding by the PC. Also, Apple files could not be fast forwaded / rewinded on the Squeezebox either.
