Hi all

I currently use a Marantz SA-15S1 CD/SACD player and matching PS-15S1 amp through a pair of ageing Mission 782 floorstanders.

I listen to most kinds of music from indie and punk to metal with the odd diversion into reggae and classical.

I would like to change the speakers as I'm finding the current presentation a little flat and lacking in 'kick' - they are probably a little too smooth on the end of what is a pretty refined Marantz set up.

My music room is about 6 meters square and I would like to audition some new floorstanders up to £2k - the Spendor A6 and PMC FB1i's interest me, but I'd welcome any other suggestions.

Cheers

John

Our Group Test of @£2K floorstanders in the current, July issue could be a useful, pre-audition read, too

Kevin Stephens:Monitor Audio GS20 should be worth a listen, if the GS10 is anything to go by

I agree that.

A few days ago I gave a fast read to this group test (from another mag)... Maybe it helps to build your shortlist before the WHF group test is published. Hope it helps.

What area are you in? If you have a local dealer who handles Audiovector, their Mi3 Signature SE will give PMC and Wilson Benesch a run for their money but they are slightly over your budget. I had the same budget as you until I heard those babies.

We have the Marantz 15 series and the PMC FB1i's sound great on the end of it.Plenty of bottom end but not at the expense of detail. At this level though a good demonstartion is my main recommendation.

Hi John

I also agree with KS and SMO in that the Monitor Audio 20's are well worth a serious look as they'll help add even more bite to the sound than the 782's can. Some of the finest sounds that i have heard many of the upmarket Marantz components of recent years is with Tannoy speakers. So Tannoy's are also well worth a look.

The ATC SCM40's is a model that i would have also normally suggested at this price level with (amongst other qualities) their superb neutral, uncoloured and natural presentation. However with the 40's in effect stepping out of the way the refined presentation of these Marantz components will in effect remain. So in this instance with these Marantz components (working together) and with the 40's on the end are not going to be an ideal match.

The 782's are very good (i sold quit a few of them) and if they are working fine and have enough scale to work in your room (although not having enough bite and kick working with the amp+cdp) than i think you should hold on to them and consider the possibility of changing the amplifier. I believe this is where you might gain the biggest difference for your budget.

Thanks
