Hi,

I fancy getting a Harmony remote - have seen a few threads with various comments - my equipment list is in the signature - what one would current users of these remotes recommend and why?

Ta for your time.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

Any of the Harmony remotes will work all of that equipment apart from the PS3, which will need an add-on remote receiver which plugs into one of the USB sockets, and works on infrared rather than the Bluetooth of the standard PS3 remotes.

I'm a big fan of the rechargeable 895 and 885 remotes, but one of the more affordable battery models would be as good as long as you're prepared to keep changing batteries.

I got the Harmony 555 because it didn't have rechargeable batteries. I read a lot of posts in forums (not this one I'm afraid
emotion-3.gif
) which suggested the remote had a tendency to fall out of the charge cradle and the last thing I wanted is it not working cos it fell out overnight and the next evening I wanted to do something. So I got the 555 - have had it and used it for over a year now and so far it's required 8 AAA batteries (it uses four at a time).

The One. It's the best universal remote I've owned. I came from Pronto to a 525 and now the One. Try and see if you can try them out in the shops so you can get a feel for them. The setup is more or less the same for all of them as they share the same software. I had a 525 but upgraded to the One and I'm glad I did. It feels like a better product, the 525/555 models have clicky buttons and don't have rechargable batteries. The One has a nice coloured screen (no coloured buttons but the screen works very well) and layout. I'm sure there is a discount code out there right now for Amazon to get you £25 off the One but I don't know what it is. If you need to control equipment in a cupboard etc. the 895 and 1000 offer RF.

I ordered the one from Amazon using the code currently a Pronto 940 user but selecting Freesat/Analogure on Pronto is a bit of a pain , don't know if the one will solve the issue but some here think it may at £75 It's worth a go as my Pronto screen is begining to fade so don't know how long it'l last. Go for the offer now most seem to like it.

Hi,

Are the 885 and 895 the 'old' models then, superceded by the 'One'? Happy to go with any of these but if one has an advantage then I'd perhaps sway towards that model. Can't find any in local white goods stores to be touchy feely with.

Can't see the 1000 on the Logitech site but saw news items that it's also been superceded.

Thanks.

Cofnchtr.

The 1000 has been superseded by the 1100. I don't advise you pick up a 1000 though, even if you see a cheap deal, there are very buggy. You only have to check the Harmony support forums.

The 895 is still current, and is fab (well I would say that I own one). I wanted RF control for out of sight devices and it also does Z-Wave, so my lights are linked into the activities.

If you don't need those features then the 885 will do fine.

The recharging cradle isn't as good as it could be, but I have only ever had one occasion when it ran flat until I realised the cause. You just have to be precise when placing it in the cradle. Apparently, the shape of the bottom of the remote was changed late in the design cycle and they didn't quite get the cradle to match!!

Hi,

Narrowed to an 885 or 'One' then - major differences?

Used the compare on the Logitech site and they seem very similar other than the touch screen facility on the 'One'.

Edit: Just bought the Harmony One from Amazon - thanks for the offer code D4v3

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

Hi,

Set up the remote earlier - does anyone know of a site that will give me Sky channel icons to add into the screen?

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

LINK I must admit I don't use them that often. I prefer a sequence to the the HD channel guide, planner, Anytime etc. rather than using the icons. They work a treat though.

Hi,

Thanks again d4v3 - will have alook and see what's there to download etc.

Tried to get my amp to turn on. select correct input and then turn volume up (I usually turn it down when I turn off at night) but it didn't turn the volume up - I guess that I have to programme the Harmony to turn up volume lots of times for it to have the desired effect?

Any other tips/hints are more than welcomed.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

Hi Cofnchtr,

I missed the boat on the discount offers but am still considering getting the Harmony One. Having had yours some weeks now, what is your experience, do you recommend it ? Did you get the auto voloume up on switch on working?

Not Confnchtr but sure he will respond when he has time , but I've had one for bout 2 months now and it's great , have an issue with changing to analogue inputs on my Panny Freesat TV from cable and support have been great even to the extent of getting back in touch after they fixed it cos they think they have a better/quicker way of doing it .(Last change threw in a couple of bugs but they have been calling me from Canada to sort it and are really good)

Volume thing shouldn't be problem you just do as many voulume up/downs as you need.

For anyone who has a PS3 Logitech have recently announced a Bluetooth adaptor for the PS3 - not available just yet but in the pipeline

Hi Rogue,

Sorry - haven't been on all the usual forums for a while - work etc...

Didn't solve the volume up on switch on issue (or off) but I just do that manually now (or leave the volume up when I turn off). I'm sure if I asked on the forums it would be solved fairly swiftly.

I'd certainly recommend the 'ONE' - even the 'other half' has succumbed to it's charms. Very easy to become lazy when turning the tv/amp/skyhd on.

Thanks for that.

Very tempting at £85 at the moment - must do something to reduce the number of remotes I have - I deliberately teamed Sony kit with Sony kit to benefit from Bravia sync and whilst I can pretty much do everything from (say) the amp control it's far from intuitive and the rest of the family struggle (child-minding parents, wife, kids). Having small children also means an unintentional game of 'find the remote' is frequently played!

I have a further question about how such devices operate - I can appreciate that the Harmony One can be programmed to perform a series of tasks (a macro if you will) that turns on appropriate pieces of equipment and adjusts their settings according to the desired outcome eg. to play a game, watch a movie, listen to music etc. My concern is that if this programme takes the form:

  • Switch on TV
  • Switch on AMP
  • Switch on DVD Player
  • Select DVD on AMP
  • etc etc

..if a device that is to be powered on is already switched on - will the sequence played by the remote actually switch that device off given that there is only one signal for 'on' and 'off'?

So in the above example, if the TV and AMP are already on (but the TV is not currently taking the AMP signal) and I run this macro to set everything up for a movie will it in fact switch the DVD on but switch the TV and AMP off?

I have not yet configured my Harmony one, but I understand it has a 'smart mode' in which it recognises some equipment is already turned on and it doesnt shut it off. But I've not tried it yet - need the kit to arrive first lol!

SST (Smart State Technology) keeps track of whether you devices are on/off providing you always control things via an activity and not the device menu, manually switch off/on or use original remote.

Even tho your original remote may just have a power toggle button the database may have discrete codes for off/on which could also help things .

Hi Rogue,

I have some 'activities' set up - all of which include the TV. When I activate each, the remote remembers what state each equipment is in (either on or off and which setting its on) and as stated earlier, if original remote or the 'devices' option within the Harmony has not been used, the remote will recognise this and only switch necessary units to the appropriate settings.

If I switch to my 'listen to cd' option, my SKY+HD box is switched off but everything else needed for CD listening is correctly set up. When I go back to the 'watching TV' activity the SKY+HD will turn on, the TV will return to the correct AV input and the amp will switch to the TV input.

All that's required from the user is careful set up when initially configuring the remote. 🙂

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.
