Hi,

how can the Linn sound be described?

Their kit is highly rated by Audio.de.

And using this notation, how would you contrast it to a Naim or Arcam amplifier?

Linn DS

To my ears, this is the best thing they do. They avoid sounding bright and forward, but still remains lively and engaging.....the most analogue sounding of the digital sources that I've heard.

The DSMs are more versatile and forward thinking than most, given our AV / 2 channel type systems.

Linn Amps

They use their own form of Class D.

For years I found them a bit cold, analytical and uninvolving, but in recent times, I heard them with the Kef R Series and have had to eat my words somewhat.

Linn Speakers

I find them a bit Meh.........they are pleasant enough, but unexciting and unexceptional.

Linn System

IME. A Linn system does gel well enough, but is expensive for the sound it gives. There are huge Linnie fans, who wouldn't buy anything else.

It gives a very detailed, insightful and somewhat musical sound, but it doesn't draw me into the music like a Class A or Valve based system

There is a big jump in quality when you go Active, but also a big price increase.

Very good question!

Linn: Li li li li liiii

Naim: La la la la laaaa

Arcam: Lo lo lo lo loooo

Creek: Le le le le leeee

I think that Cno has probably summed up the Linn 'sound' very succintly but I'm not sure about Nima. I've definitely heard some Lo, Le and La as well as the Li Liii!

There again ........ I'm often wrong.

In all seriousness, Nima probably hits the nail on the head. No amount of words is really going to give you an idea of the sound, so seek out a Linn dealer and give some of their kit a listen.
