Looking for a new system for the kitchen. Debating on the Denon D-M37DAB + ipod dock with small bookshelf speakers or possibly the Vita Audio R2i. As the saying goes size does matter - if I go for the Denon the speakers have to be quite small due to layout. Unfortunately the system will be on top of an upright piano so looking for quite lean sounding speakers if going for the Denon. Any suggestions for a good match for the Denon or comments on the Vita.

I would go for the Vita Audio R2i

And put a little shelf up for it. A piano is a large, resonant cabinet that will...err.. resonate with speakers on it.

Thanks - The shelf is a definite no-no - I've done quite well being allowed to keep my 5.1 system in the lounge in our new house, so the chances of drilling holes for a new shelf in the just redecorated kitchen is highly unlikely (that's an optimistic view! - and the piano is the only place for it to stop my 18 month old son trying to stick knives, toast, and other items into it.

In which case more reason to go for the Vita.

Smaller built in speakers than traditional seperate 'bookshelf' speakers so therefore less bassy and therefore less likely to 'excite' 2nd hand vibrations in the piano.

Also a bit lighter - with very smooth rounded (wooden) edges - than the Denon.

Just in case it gets pulled off the piano when your 18 month-old is a bit bigger. (Vita is 3.6kg, smooth rounded wood edges. Denon is 4.3kg - without speakers - and has angular, metal edges. Good speakers could weigh almost as much - each - and be two more heavy sharp edged boxes that could fall on him!

You could also place a granite chopping board underneath. Only £9.99, and the small rubber feet would further isolate the Vita and protect the surface of the piano.

I was trying to minimise the landslide of 'stuff' that could fall on the OP's intrepid toddler. Now you've just gone and added a heavy slab of igneous rock!

Ah, good point

But surely the rubber feet would stop it from sliding off?

I mean the Vita could still be yanked off the smooth granite but the chopping board would stay put, no?

The boards in my kitchen are actually a pain to move sometimes! The rubber feet are so small, the thin layer of air underneath creates a suction effect.
