Hi

I am having a problem with airport express. itunes and airfoil can both identify the airport express but are unable to connect to it. In itunes I just get a box come up with "connecting" and the cursor shows its searching but nothing happens. Airfoil also shows it is connecting but finds nothing.

I have a green light on the AE and it is showing up in Airport utility that everything is fine, so i'm abit stumped.

I'm using windows vista and a bt homehub

If anyone has had a similar problem or can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks

hi titus,

if you are not getting any error messages in airport utility please try to goo to setup and make sure that enable air tunes is ticked.

Thanks for the reply

just checked the setup and the air tunes box was already ticked. Still no joy.

Have your tried turning off your firewall? It did the trick for me (using Kaspersky here).

I am also using Kaspersky and have just tried turning off the firewall. After 10 mins of searching still no luck. I might try resetting the thing and starting again.

you also need to check your router settings to make sure it is accepts connections from other wireless devices and that it is not limited to certain mac or certain ip addresses

also need to make sure the ae settings are correct and that it is set to join another network the password word is correct and so forth

this unfortunately can be a headache to solve have a look at the apple forums which might be able to help

Thanks for your reply

Just been to my home hub settings, and on "my network" the airport express is registered and shown as "active".

In airport utility it is set to: join an existing network. And the correct wep password was entered. I'm still getting the green status light but no connection.

Thanks for the suggestion of the Apple forums, I shall take a look.

if its a network issue you might want to open following ports TCP 3689, UDP 5353. this will enable you to stream music to ae.

also check if windows firewall is not preventing the connection.

airport express will show green light but will not connect if you have swaped cables from phono to optical when ae was switched on

or when cable was movedpulled by accident.

if the above doesnt help the only way to go is to do a reset of ae, then unplug it . uninstall itunes, airfoil, airport utility. restart computer, make sure firewall is switched off. install fresh copies of of the above. then try to connect ae.

hopes this will help

Thanks for the reply

I have checked and the windows firewall is off and it shouldn't be a cable problem.

I'm not sure how to open the ports or where to find them. If you could direct me to where they might be I would be most grateful.

thanks

see this link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1601

i dont use kasperky to tell you exactly how to do it. you wil have to go to setup menu and take it from there.

also you might want to look here

let me know if it helps

Thanks for your help.

I had a look at the forum thread link, and thats where I was up to already.

The apple support link I just couldn't understand. I don't know if my computer is different but I couldn't follow the instructions past point2. Sorry but I'm awful with computers.

The intructions say "click network and internet connections" I haven't got that option. The nearest thing is "Network and Sharing centre" It then says to "click on network connections" the nearest I have is "manage network connections." In there there is no sign of the airport express.

In other sub folders of the "network and sharing centre" where I can see the AE, I can't get into the "advanced settings" suggested by apple. So I'm still stuck.

How long should it take to connect to the AE? I just want to check i'm not being impatient. At the moment i'm leaving it for about 10mins.

Thanks

what is the firmware level on the ae and what revision of the ae utility and itunes

also is the windows firewall enabled

10 mins is more than enough for iTunes to pick it up.

Within your BT home settings, can you see the AE picked up as one of your wireless devices at all? If not, you might want to add it.

that was my thought but the ae is showing as registered

a wild one this but there is a thread that indicates windows firewall should be turned on with vista otherwise itunes wont see the ae

this seems unlikely to me but worth a try maybe

one off:

what is the firmware level on the ae and what revision of the ae utility and itunes

also is the windows firewall enabled

Firmware level on AE is 7.4.2. AE utility is 5.4.2 and itunes is version 9.0.25.2. Windows firewall is not enabled but the kaspersky firewall is. I have disabled the kaspersky firewall and tried it a few times but still no connection.

The odd thing is that itunes shows the AE as a selectable device and attempts to connect but I just get the connecting to AE loading box

I've had a similiar prblem with my setup each time I've added an ae unit to my wireless network with my BT homehub.

A very simple solution wokred for me each time - shut down the pc, switch off the homehub at the wall, switch off the ae unit.

Power up the homehub and wait for it to fully power up and connect to broadband, switch on the ae unit and wait until you have a green light on it, log on the pc and try to connect again.

The simplest of suggestions I know but i have 3 ae units on my network now and have had this problem the first time with each one when I've installed it. Doing this each time cleared the problem each time and they've worked perfectly ever since.

Gotta be worth a go!

I've only gone and bloomin' done it!

I say I, more like the kind people at Apple and Kaspersky support who had to put up with my ignorance for a few hours.

It turns out it was Kaspersky causing the problems but not the firewall. A few tweeks in "My security zone", a few swear words and restarts and I am now streaming Richard Hawley through Airfoil to my Dacmagic.

Thanks to all for the suggestions

Well done mate, enjoy your streaming! Could be helpful to others if you can post what you changed in Kaspersky or maybe you just want to forget about it and go and lie down!

Thanks bassound.

If anyone is interested, these are the settings I changes.

In Kaspersky go to "My security zone" then click on "application activity". It might make it easier if all programs you want to use to stream are in the category "running" (itunes, airfoil, basestation) if not look for them in "trusted application". Then right click on them and select "change status" and then "custom settings". Click on the tab "exclusions" and select all 4 boxes (Do not scan opened files, do not monitor application activity, do not monitor child application activity and do not scan network traffic) and click O.K.

I was told by Kaspersky support to do this with every file related to itunes and airportexpress. I then downloaded Airfoil and did the same. I didn't have to change any settings in Spotify.

I might go through the files again and change them back to trusted to see which specific ones caused the problem.
