Right, this may sound daft but please bear with me. I have a mac, ipod and use iTunes. I am going away for a month and will be taking a mac laptop with me (haven't bought this yet). Can I refresh my podcasts, add tracks to my library etc on the laptop and when I return my mac computer know what I have been up to if I sync it? Does anyone know what I am trying to ask? Thanks, hopefully.

Um....think so, but don't think so - seeing as your iPod can only be synced to one machine at once, when you sync it to your Mac at home it will clear it out. Does that answer the right question?

And I don;t think you can download again tracks to another Mac which you've bought via the one Apple user account, though at least if they're iTunes plus you can move them...

What a shame. I wanted to sort through my library and manage it better while I had a bit of time on my hands. ÿThanks for the info though. ÿI probably wont buy a laptop now so that has saved me some money at least. Oh well.........

Actually, I think you can. Am in the process of transferring from my one library to another on the same machine. On attaching my iPod Touch for the first time, it said there were things purchased on this iPod and would I like to re-download them (since I was using the same Apple id in the new library). It then re-downloaded all the apps I'd bought into my new Library. This was for apps rather than music but I would have thought the same applied - otherwise how can you re-download music should you have to rebuild your Mac?

I didn't think you could, which I thought was one of the biggest complaints. Though I haven't tried it, frankly, not having had to rebuild anything recently.

But I think the issue is with different machines - if I connect my iPod to my laptop, it wants to wipe it, and the quesiton is presumably more targeted at using the same account on two different machines. I feel some googling is in order.......

Aha. A cursory google for 'sync itunes libraries two computers' has brought up (inter alia), this, which looks almost good enough to buy myself

Eddie Pound:"Manually manage my music"

This won't get round the issue of having to erase and re-sync whenever you connect the iPod up to a different machine as John says. However, if you kept the two libraries in sync with John's software, it would work I reckon. Admittedly, when you connected to the laptop after connecting to the desktop (and vice versa), it would have to erase and then re-sync exactly the same playlists, but it would at least work!

You can do it relatively easily on a PC (appreciate that the Ops is talking about a Mac but other PC owning people maybe interested) but there are a couple of caveats:

1) You need to sync a number of XML files between the two machines

2) The music really needs to be in the same path (either UNC or local). You can get round this by editing paths in XML but its a pain.

oh the other thing to consider is that since Apple is doing away with the DRM thing there's nothing stopping you copying the files over manually. Sort by date added then just copy the files over a home lan

Actually you can do the same with protected files as well provided they are purchased on the same account.
