hello all...working nights at the moment so forgive the late post. well...its been a year since i bought my cambridge 740a and 740c with monitor audio RS8s. to be honest ive never warmed to the system. it lacks some of the excitment that i had with my 12 year old sony set up. to my ears it just sounds ok...not spectacular. the bass is tight and well controlled but for me...something is missing! do you know what i mean? having spent nearly 2000 euro at the time iam wondering if ive made the classic mistake of buying before auditioning.

ok... so what next? i was on to cloony audio in dublin and they have offered me a cyrus 6 or 8 for demo with the matching cd player. calling all cyrus owners... is the hype to be belived about them? they look great and would they suite the MA RS8s? iam looking for open sound stage with some of the excitment that i once had... music tastes vary from weller to rusby, folk to rock. my room is sound proofed and carpeted. 16ft by 10ft so its not huge,,.this budget is again about 2000 euro,

a million thanks to all....

congrats to the lucky guy who won the 12 grands worth!

go for it mate. When I joined here I was suprised at the amount of hi-fi enthusiasts that had CA gear, as to me it had always been a budget brand made by and pushed by Richer sounds. ( Ive since been told that I am very very wrong, though a quick companies search shows a different story). Anyway, I of course was told to get CA stuff. I did, I home auditioned it for a week. it went straight back.

And, ive noticed some of those pro CA guys have sold up and bought other stuff. Moral is, by all means ask, for a bit of fun, but definatley home audition. Firstly it has to appeal to your tastes, and secondly peope on forums often rave about whatever they currently own.

Two remarks, not related to Cyrus/CA:

1. The improvement I noticed from a budget/mainstream integrated amp (NAD 320BEE) to a Primare A10 (their entry level of some years ago) was considerable, more than I had expected really. If you think you can say no after a demo there is nothing wrong with it of course.

2. Having said that, your gear should sound decent enough as it is - room acoustics, placement of speakers would be a first thing to fiddle with before embarking on changing the amp/source (and there might also be cable suggestions coming up..). But maybe you already have done this.

i think you need to audition a little.

noting your comments on the Cambridge Audio - from my own personal demos Cyrus are in a similar presentation field to what you already own, but better. So you are heading towards lean and fast and detailed presentation.

noting your comments it could be that lean and fast isnt what you are looking for so it would be certainly worth trying alongside Cyrus products such as an Arcam combination and a Naim set up just to see the differences.

Before jumping the gun, see if you can get the 840a on home demo - much better and more powerful (which is what you need with your speakers) than the 740a.

I agree with Crusaderlord. Cyrus is probably the wrong direction. I suspenct the "excitement" you are looking for is a warmer sound. Arcam, Musical Fidelity, Quad, Primare, maybe Roksan. Those are the brands you should consider. Good luck.

I suspect many posters saying 'don't listen to Cyrus' haven't heard the company's kit for years and are basing their opinions on the older, leaner-sounding Cyrus products

But yes, audition plenty of brands - take your time, and take your favourite discs with you, too! Make sure you find a system (including cables) that suits your music and ears.

I agree. Newer 6xp and 8xp are quite diferent in their presentation to the older 6 and 8 amplifiers (and previous models). But not only have their amplifiers come a long way, but so has their CD players. I think with the new 'Plus' CD players and XP ampliers, Cyrus are going to be quite popular next year......

Hi methodman,

I wanted to take this opportunity to comment on the relationship between Richer Sounds and Cambridge Audio; as I have already explained elsewhere on this forum.

There is indeed a link between Richer Sounds and Audio Partnership (the makers of Cambridge Audio), with Julian Richer being part owner of Audio Partnership. This relationship actually brings great benefits to customers of Richer Sounds as we are able to cut out the distributor meaning we can then bring in super cutting edge quality products at fantastic prices (compare our prices in the UK to distributors retail prices on Cambridge Audio products elsewhere in Europe), something which is regularly testified and certainly borne out in numerous hi-fi magazine reviews.

I hope this clarifies our position although please do not hesitate to let me know and I will do my best to help.

Many thanks,

John Clayton
Operations Director
Richer Sounds

If you think that's bad, get this: there's a couple of people on this forum who work for Sony Centres. Ever been to one of them? They try to flog you Sony gear! Shocking...

good morning...
