Hi all,

Im sure this has come up before,im a newcomer to the hifi scene(always loved music)and have only recently purchased my first serious set up hifi and home cinema in seperate rooms.

Trouble is im now obsessed with all of it and cant wait for future upgrades etc etc...

Just wondering if the temptation subsides over the months and years or does it get worse!!!

What have i got myself into??

It gets worse

I have no sympathy...

Tough...

I went 11 years being happy with one system (Rega/Yamaha/KEF) then found this forum.

Now I have been through two systems in two years! (Ok every component has sold well and lost me little money but I was sort of intending to find another 'decade+' system originally. Grrr)

It definitely gets worse. Just upgrading the sub cable or the HDMi cable, then it's the amp, then its the TV. Then there's a new invention! LED, HD, 3D! Where does it all end?!

It just gets worse!

Went from a cambridge 340 amp and cd with ms 902i speakers 3 years ago to what I have now! It gets more expensive each time too lol. At least I am happy with the sound now, thank god!

I've got a lot better as I am now satisfied with the sound of my system with movies. But now I've started thinking a lot more about music.

Not necessarily a healthy pass time...but I don't care. I enjoy it

Oh it gets worse, your music suddenly comes alive to your ears and that's it, no looking back after that. At the moment I am very happy with my system but my eyes are starting to look towards other amps lol

with hifi, I suppose there is a similarity to this youtube video ....

you dream of owning the 1st option .... but you end up having the 2nd option ....

and they both do the same thing

I found a cure that worked for me. Several years ago i was a real hifi nut and I had som really high end stuff. One day i found that i spent more attention to listening to the sound than the music itself so I sold everything I had. Got myself a nice B&O system and lived happily with it for over a decade while my cd collection grew to over 3000 cd's and counting. I was happyer than i ever was when i listened for faults in the system or ways to upgrade. That B&O system still lives a productive life in the living room and i got another hifi for my homeoffice/cave (see sig). Havent spent much on that system but happy as a clam 🙂

I'm not sure. I think it is possible to control it once you have a system you enjoy listening to, and I actually think it is very important to do so. It can take over your life and start to get in the way of simply enjoying the music.

I got 2 systems in less than a month...Promotions...thats my addcition..

I always tend to buy stuff with some kind of logic put to mind.last thing I got was a receiver that cost me no more than a separate tuner..hk3490.because i had no tuner.only the one from crapy old homecinema

it helps to keep to a planned upgrade path and recognising the strengths and weaknesses of the existing setup.

Is there a cure?

Good news rockywebb - YES.
Stay off these web sites, don't look in shop windows or flick through glossy magazines with shiny pictures...in fact - don't leave your house or have any contact with the human world. Just sit in your armchair occupying the sweetspot position, and listen to your music!

Oh dear - you have now gotten yourself on to debt - agonizing decisions - hours at hifi dealers...

LOL!!!

Enjoy!!!

The cure is when you realise that you are that you are a nutter to actually spend hundred of pounds on upgrades in sound that you convince yourself is ligitimatly there even though they actually might not be. Also when you cant be bothered or have time to listen to music anymore - like me. Having said that still very reluctant to part with my system - it would be like losing a loved one!

the usual way to end and obsession is to stop completely and cut off the temptation.

about 3 years ago i was sold on the world of warcraft game - it occupied way too much time outside of work and stopped me interracting with my family. after nearly 2 years of obsessing with the game i had to completely stop and uninstall it and hey presto it worked

actually this is what got me back into music and hi-fi which is a far more pleasant hobby really and is easier to dip in and out of as time permits

that said i dont think i will ever stop thinking about the next upgrade but it isnt a 'must have' issue - i think i have had the core of my Arcam / Neat system for over 18 months now which is great really

i still look at Unison Research items and wonder if i could get anything much better out of say a Secondo / CD or CDE system so thats my goal but as my Arcam sound so good it isnt something i feel i have to do

Here are some possible solutions to the problem.

1. Never listen to music

2. Stop watching movies

3. Don't spend more than what you earn

4. Say no to loans and credit cards

5. Discontinue reading hi-fi and home cinema magazines

If you can avoid these things you are cured.
