Is it worth upgrading?

I am wondering whether it's worth upgrading my current speakers.

My system comprises of a Rega apollo cd player, Nad c370 amp and epos M16 speakers.

I am happy with the CD and amp (had a roksan kandy l3 but couldn't live with it) but was wondering whether an upgrade to my speakers would give an improvement in sound quality.

I am considering Rega R3's or PMC GB1 (2nd hand) speakers, I listen to mainly guitar based music (rock, Indie etc).

My listening room is about 3.5m by 5m.

My preferance is for small floorstanders, but will I get an appreciative improvement or should I stick with what I've got?

I willing to spend up to a grand if I will get a decent improvement.

Cheers

For the music you listen to, you will love the PMC GB1s...they are awsome speakers. The difference should be huge, so give them an audition!

I have spotted a pair of PMC GB1's 2nd hand, but I wont be able to audition them. Do you think they are worth a punt?

Very good speakers the GB1s, the older one's being slightly harsher in the treble than the new version. The whole transmission line approach to bass design works well in my opinion. Give them a try.

I think the m16's I have are a touch metallic sounding, so I am slightly wary when you say they are harsh in the treble. I know it's hard to answer but will the pmc's be a good upgrade?

To be honest, with that amount of money I think you should audition them as you might not like them enough. A pair of speakers at that price will be a good investment so err of the side of caution. See if you can audition a pair of Rega R3 or R5 as they go for about £500 and £700 respectably and are very good too. Many have said that they're a steal at those prices; Rega have always been rather competitive with their kit. If you can stretch the budget then the new PMC GB1i (£1250) and FB1i (£1650?) are outstanding. I would have the latter myself if I had the space :)

If you are worried about treble, then you should look at ProAc Tablette Reference 8 Signatures. Sweet as a nut and enjoyable speakers with a very nice treble, not bright, thrashy or metallic. And they are pretty small too.

TBH when I tried these I found them to have the Proac house sound, slightly lifted treble. Very very good, but require considered matching and placement.
