Hi All,

I am chuffed to bits with my new cyrus 8SE player, but one thing I did not pay any attention to when I was in the shop was the lack of random track playing function.

Has other players not got this function too, or just this player?

My rega has it, all my other players had it, and the arcam cd192 I just sold had it as well.

Just trying to find out if others have it as well or not?

most 'serious' Cd players avoid things like random play, just as better amps avoid tone controls etc. Minimalism is a key part of hifi snobbery. At the top of the tree you are left with just an on-off switch (but you have to pay thousands for equipment like that of course).

I know I am no where near top notch hifi yet, and doubt I ever will be, as other things need to be bought in life. It was the missus who pointed it out, as she likes to listen to various tracks, and so do I.

Sure we will get used to it, or I am downgrading to a sony cd walkman lol

My wife is like that. If I bought her a Bugatti Veyron she'd complain about the lack of cup holders.

I accept that it may just be me, but can anyone explain why you need a random function on a CD player? I can see the point on an mp3 player - we have an iPod and dock in the kitchen, and it's very entertaining to be surprised by the choice of tracks it makes, but on a CD, you have a limited no. of tracks, and more often than not, at least in my collection, only one artist.

It is nice sometimes to listen to the cd in a different order, as you always know what track is coming next, so get used to it.

The unexpected can make you smile, and it breaks the idea of knowing what track is next.....

Unless you are listening to Now Thats what I call music ?? (and who would want to?), I annot see the point of a random function. Albums are usually ordered the way they by the artist for a reason.

Yeah that is an interesting one.. Fair enough cd's have limited ammount of tracks but the element of suprise is good, I sometimes put my ipod on shuffle mude when i listen to albums. Plus some albums can have about 20 songs so the random play is nice.
