Can anybody help, whilst watching HD transmission through my Sony STR-DA1200ES multi channel AV receiver I experience pauses on the sound at perioic intervals, it occurs often, very annoying. Whilst watching ordinary television channels via the receiver there is no problem. I was wondering could this be a HDMI cable or OPTICAL cable fault, or could the fault be in the receiver ? I would be very grateful for any suggestions how to go about carrying out a process of elimination. Many of my cables from various other equipment go through switch boxes ie :- HDMI, OPTICAL & COAXIAL prior to the receiver input selections, that what makes me think that the fault could more of cable problem. Looking forward to any replies, thanking you kindly. Regards :- FROGIT

If you are watching the HD transmissions via SKY HD you may find the fault lies there.. I experience this problem as well from time to time. If I have recorded the program the fault repeats itself whenever I play back the recording indicating that the problem is either in the recording to disc ,or the transmission itself. It only seems to occur on HD programmes which are in Dolby Surround or Dolby Digital, not normal stereo on SD transmissions.

Try connecting the optical and coaxial cables directly to the Amp for a while to see if it still happens, sounds like a possible duff connection somewhere or if it's only optical, then maybe there is some dirt on one or both ends of the optical lead. Try changing cables until problem goes away. If not then try another input to the amp.

Thanks for your reply, but I think the problem has been solved, :- Loose casing on the HDMI plug that goes from the AV/
Receiver to the HD television set, should not get the problem again I super glued the casing together, also replaced all
the switch boxes with a new box which accomodates HDMI, OPTICAL & COAXIAL connections in one box, make life a
lot easier.

Has this provided a permanent solution to the problem. My similar cut out problem had seemed to have gone away, but I watched "Southland Tales" on SKY Box Office HD at the weekend and was plagued by dropouts in the Dolby 5.1 soundtrack.
