I have £200 to spend on increasing the sq of my audio setup.

I have an arcam alpha 9, wharfedale valdus 500 and a subwoofer and my source is a half broken laptop 3.5mm jack such that i have output mono sound.

Not looking for a long term investment want the best sound now, not selling anything: would the best idea be to get a dac/soundcard or speakers or maybe both of a lesser quality? Not bothered by second hand purchases.

Thanks immensely for your help :)

Agreed with bodfish on getting the source sorted.

Source a cheap sound card and let the PC do the conversion or if you can bypass the 3.5mm jack with USB or Firewire port then use an external DAC, whatever takes preference.

How about looking at a USB DAC to circumvent the broken stereo minijack, something like the Beresford T5720 perhaps? It gets very good reviews. Also worth checking out the Music Fidelity V-Dac, but can't remember if it has USB...
