If you could recommend an album that has never received any critical aclaim, or great chart success or by an artist that only a select few have heard, what would it be?

For me I would recommend a listen to Chimpan A by Chimpan A. A fantastic late night album by a local welsh group, very unlike the majority of music currently coming out of the principality.

I don't know the chart position of this album when it first came out but I rate it very highly on song writing skill and recording.

I love the musical underworld, but I was listening to Hymie's Basement just now:

plastic penguin:Yeah, really interesting subject. It's a tricky one to call, but I would nominate Jeff Buckley's "Grace" album. Probably one of the top albums of the 90's.

Nah, too famous PP, doesn't count

I bet not alot of people have heard this before, Alabama 3 "La Peste". After a few listens you will be completely hooked, excellent album. http://www.onelittleshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=143 click on the mp3 on each track for a quick demo.

"Woke up this morning" was used on the opening of The Sopranos for those who havn't seen it.

Also there's a video for Clare.... "Hello..... I'm Johnny Cash" http://www.alabama3.co.uk/en/containers/video/main_video_player

EDIT: Just found this video of the lead singer "Larry Love", acoustic blues http://www.youtube.com/profile_video_blog?sid=284D5B70B97DB60E&id=F1B0B22B9F5D9A74

Kruder and Dorfmeister - K&D sessions.

Do like the Cure as well though Thaiman.

Ron Sexsmith - Time Being , Very underrated singer/songwriter.

Eagerly awating new Cure album in Oct providing release is not delayed again.

Well- it is very hard to pick just one of so many excellent albums that have been produced. But now that I have to, it's got to be:

JEFF BUCKLEY- GRACE

Don't know if this counts but for sheer production, sound quality & listenability I would recommend highly CHRIS ISAAC - BAJA SESSIONS from 19996 - don't think any hifi nut would be disappointed with this one.

floydfan - do you know of Snowy White at all?

Lived next door to my Dad and was in his band for a while - Snowy was a session guitarist for Floyd I think.

Nils Lofgren - by Nils Lofgren ( also known as the Fatman album)

A classic pop/rock album by an underated solo performer only ever recognised by togs for "Shine Silently".

What a great thread - already got a list to listen to! I would recommend Moroccan Roll by Brand X.

Surf Matt - I have an lp of Snowy White's blues band - haven't listened to it for ages but will tonight, thanks for

the prompt.

The Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime - 1984. Big infulence on RHCP and Pixies, minimalist funky punk toons, great musicians, intelligent lyrics, a mammoth 43 tracks (46 on vinyl), seriously worth checking out.

Drummerdave:The Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime
Great shout. 'Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing' is genius.
I'd go for 'Rounds' by Four Tet - best album of the century so far. Muscular, tender, lyrical, abstract...

"list monitors arrive with petition iron-fisted philosophy is your life worth a painting? is this girl vs. boy with different symbols? being born is power scout leader **** tagged as big sin your risk chains me hostage me, i'm fighting with my head, am not ambiguous i must look like a dork me, naked with textbook poems spout fountain against the *** with weird kinds of sex symbols in speeches that are big dance thumps if we heard mortar shells we'd cuss more in our songs and cut down the guitar solos (guitar solo) so dig this big crux organizing the boy scouts for murder is wrong ten years beyond the big sweat point man, it was still there, ever without you coming back around, look! coming together, for just a second, a peek, a guess at the wholeness that's way too big"

I'm the first to admit that some songs lose their impact when you write them down and, erm, take away the music and the performance.

Wouldn't worry about comments from a Journey fan Simon...
