Ive recently put a larger hard drive into my ps3,put all my cd's and mp3's onto it.but playing them through my tv sounds crappy.can anyone recommend a set up with a budget of about £500,been told i need an amp and speakers is this right if so what is suggested.cheers!!

Actually you need a DAC + Amp + Speakers.

DAC from Cambridge Audio suppose to be good (199£) but I'm not sure if that would fit in the budget..

A DAC will convert the digital signal to analog but does not amplify it. So, you need to connect the DAC to an amplifier to actually hear any sound.

Some DACs do come with a headphone included, eg the Beresford TC-7510, but most, like the DAC Magic, Cyrus DAC, do not.

Well you don't need an external DAC, but I'll admit it's a nice to have...

But if you don't have a DAC how are you going to connect optical to amplifier? I think you need either a DAC, CD Player with optical input or AV Receiver with HDMI input (which has build in DAC anyway).
