I have a relatively old hi-fi of which I am quite fond and can't afford to replace (tube technology amp, Audionote speakers and currently NAIM CD player) and the reality is that, seemingly like the rest of the world, I have moved to I-Pod and listen to it less and less as I am buying no new cds only downloads now. I would like to connect the I-Pod to it and get the best sound I can - what do I need what what should I be looking for??

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Russ andrews has a kimber based cable that docks with the bottom of the ipod (around £54) which got a ÿ5* review in WHF recently. ÿThe main thing is to use a cable that connects with the base of the ipod, not the headphone output, to use the line stage and not the headphone amp. ÿCan also use a dock, but this doesn't really add much to just plugging the cable directly into the base.

Can I jump on this bandwagon please?

I've just been given an Itouch (first venture into this format) and have been looking at ways to connect it to my "stereo".

It's a Denon DM31.

4 I've been pointed to are:

Cambridge Audio ID10 - £9.99

Kensington Entertainment Dock 500 - £14.95

GQ-24 Ultra Plate interconnect - £47.96

Arcam R Dock - £116

A wide variety of prices and I've heard there may be volume level issues on some of them.

I'm not bothered about remote control or video viewing.

Given my "system" which will give me the best sound or will I not really notice the difference?

I don't want to pay £116 if something cheaper will give me similar performance.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd suggest the Cambridge Audio ID10, they are a bargin at £9.99, and offer amazing performance for the price. I can't imagine you'd get £100 more enjoyment from the Arcam.

I would recommed getting the remote for the ID10 though. Initially I got it without, but then went back a week later to get the remote so I had the volume control for the dock. It seems that out of the box the ID10's volume was quite low and without the remote I couldn't increase it.

(PS I'm runnig mine into a CA Azur 640A)

I'm about to get an iphone. Does anyone know if the ID10 will accept it? I currently hook my four year old ipod to my hifi using a cheap £5 cable out of Argos, and it shows.

Also like to jump on the bandwagon - does the ipod's (in my case the ipod touch) USB connection give a better sound than the headphone socket? And if so why?

I currently connect mine with an iChord into a Denon MD30 - would I be better off for example getting the ipod universal dock or the ID10 as mentioned (will either of these fix the problem of needing to increase the ipod and hi-fi volume to compensate?!)

Having done a bit more research I'm going for the GQ-24 Ultraplate connection.

To answer your question regarding the volume, take a look here as it may give you the answer http://www.russandrews.com/product-GQ-24-interconnect-for-iPod-2204.htm
